It's a bit of a trivial quibble, but I'm not sure the switching mechanic really makes me think "on/off." I also found that the game seemed to steer me away from switching to the ghost during the clown battle since it takes a while to get Maisy within range of the head, and it seems easier to dodge shots once you're there than it is to switch forms (which seems to dump you back down to ground level?) and make your way back up if necessary. It may be that I wasn't playing in the most efficient way, though. The game otherwise feels pretty polished: I like the graphics and the sound (especially the slowed-down music) is well selected all round.
Quite interesting. Even with the ghost form, I found it quite tricky (and fun) to navigate across all the obstacles. It's underdeveloped, but competent.
I really like the art for Maisy and Daisy. The clown is also quite spooky. The other assets are very hit-and-miss. The balloons especially look out of place.
I was surprised that the clown's head didn't hurt me by itself. I was also surprised that I could double jump. It became a little easier after that.
That's a nice use of "Maple Leaf Rag."
Good work!
Love the aesthetic and the slowed down Entertainer music, very distinct and unsettling visuals, nice job! Thank you for sharing your work on this.
And if you get a chance to check out my game Foxy Boom Boxy, I would love any feedback, thanks!
The only gripe I have with the game is the low damage and the game not really sticking to the theme.
The game also didn't tutorialize the mechanics very well, but the mechanics themselves are all powerful in their own right, so much so they warrant experimentation. This might be the most engaging game I've played and reviewed so far.
The presentation has me floored. I don't normally fear clowns, but the boss and the text below triggered my fight or flight response.
I'm morbidly curious about what else is in Meisy's dreams. 10/10
I actually lowered the damage because I was beating the boss way too quickly, with all 3 lives. The clown level is meant to be a tutorial level, but I didn't have time to set it up, so I just used the code I did have to create a regular fight. As for the theme "On/Off", I want to flesh out the "Ghost Mode" to have different abilities/weapons. You switch characters with "Right Click".
The game's style is undeniably distinct, and I had a good time playing it. However, the loading time was quite lengthy for me. In terms of feedback, I'd recommend focusing on improving the graphics and creating a well-structured main menu. Additionally, consider updating the sound effects and music for a more immersive experience. Overall, you've done a commendable job!
Graphics are meant to be like a little kid drew them, since the game is about fighting through a little girl's nightmares. My real art can be found on my Instagram @ kameltose. This proof of concept was greatly inspired by Cuphead and will be a series of boss battles.
Creepy clowns, hilarious :D
Nice idea, do keep working on it after the jam is over.
I found it fitting for the first nightmare battle to be a clown. I will rework it to be a tutorial level, though.
So, I like the creepy artwork, however the controls are very unintuitive (why is there a boss fight within the first 10s of the game?! I haven't even had time to adjust to the controls). The 'Avenging Spirit' posses mechanic is great, I think you can lean into that more. I'd polish it up a bit, make it easier for the new player to get adjusted with the game. I wanted to play more but had no clue how to beat the clown!
I meant for the clown to be a tutorial level, but spent too much time trying to fix the fight. It is also the only level. The game is designed to be a series of boss fights, like Cuphead.
