Very ominous atmosphere, simple but effective!

SCP found for sure, wasn't paying attention too much and gave me a quick little startle even though i saw and knew it. was unsure about the trigger distance.

Love your use of BG palette swap and wav file sound bites. man should play this on actual gameboy to cut out the whine.

Developer(+1)

This game can easily turn to an SCP scenario. There are emulators that play wav samples correctly. I use BGB which plays them perfectly.

Submitted(+1)

Oh maybe they fixed it in a new patch, my BGB still hisses. But I have a flashcard anyway.

I know with a limited time, you can only make so big a game, so you focused on one that is short, sweet, but still offers a fair bit and it pays off.

I managed to find all four endings.  The last one made sure I stayed wide awake. :O

I did find a couple typos for when it's time to patch fixes:

  • "Subject became violend after taking the daily dose."
  • "But you might have unleased a new plague..."

I guess there is no "Dinner" ending, huh...

Developer

First of all, well done finishing the game!
Thank you for the feedback!
Typos are my kryptonite, I will correct them after the jam. I really appreciate your help!
Your guess is correct but maybe after this jam ends... Who knows? ;)

Submitted(+1)

I prefer seeing projects look as perfect as the developer intends to make them.  Sometimes I come across as harsh, but I know what it's like to slave away at these sort of jams.  You did well!

Submitted(+1)

man really good game, with better sound could be a great idea for a bigger game, also the "shift for speed" thing was a life changer, but i only got 3 endings, coward - normal - true, how do i get the last ending?

Developer(+1)

If you want to check the last ending just move for a bit and wait. It will trigger the last ending.

Submitted(+1)

Don't fall asleep while you wait for this one, ok? :)

Submitted(+1)

Don't these scientists ever learn from the Metroid games? /lh

More seriously, the atmosphere is spot on; the lack of music plays well with the vibe of the game, and the sound effects are well done and unnerving. The graphics are good, the main character's snark made me chuckle.
I also like that the beast was just kinda this thing. You couldn't tell what it was, despite the research notes hinting at its origins.

Developer

Thank you for all the feedback! Tried to keep the atmosphere cryptic and horror inducing. It's great to hear that it worked!

Submitted(+1)

Nice spooky game! I was able to reach the normal ending and the true ending. The animated splash screen was very charming, as well! Keep up the good work! :)

Developer

Thank you for playing my game! I am happy that you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Nice, well the game certainly isn't empty like my soul XD

I enjoyed this, I like the dialogue, gameplay and the sfx are great, I actually like the idea of making you slow to up the fear factor. I don't know if it was a conscious choice to not have music or you just didn't have time, but the lack of music actually adds to the atmosphere in this game, rather than detracts.
I was only able to get the normal ending and death after four attempts haha But still enjoyed it

Developer(+1)

The empty soul quota is a reference to a youtuber, Manlybadasshero, who plays a lot of horror games.

My ability to make music is non existent, so the next best thing is to put a static as a background noise.

I am so happy that you enjoyed my little game!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

That was good. I bet the lab belongs to Umbrella Corporation ;-) For a first time top down and in three days, it was more than decent. The sound fx were great, though an ominous background music was a must. I managed the Normal and the Coward endings. Multiple deaths, do not unfortunately count as an ending... I am curious as to what others are there, I saw a True ending post from other players. I mean, once the lights go out, you cannot go past it to escape though the hole, or can you?

Developer(+1)

It never crossed my mind to add a death as an ending, maybe I should. As for the others, it doesn't involve anything during the light out. I wanted to add an ending where you try to hide in the thrash bucket but you get trapped in. I am happy that you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Oh, there. It did not occur to me. It was a trash bucket? I'll try that.

Submitted(+1)

I had fun with this!
Great job working with the limitations of the Game Boy!
The art and level design worked pretty well!
I got the "Coward Ending" and the "True Ending" ..also I was killed once

For constructive criticism, I think the player felt just a little too slow.  Speeding things along would have better enticed me to try to get all the endings.  That's really cool how you put the ending counter on the title screen though!

As a whole I think The Lab does a great job of fitting the theme and spooky vibe. Overall it works well as a horror game and I could see a longer more polished version doing well! Definitely something to be proud of!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the great feedback!

"You uncovered all the endings!"
That was fun! The mechanics are competent, the character design is charming, and the premise is solid. I like the monster!

That was a cool GBJAM 12 splash screen!

Good work!

Developer(+1)

Impressive, you 100% the game!

Glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Nice little spookie game ! :)

Developer

Really happy that you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

this is genuinely terrifying

Developer

I hope you didn't get too spooked.

Submitted(+1)

Really great atmosphere and genuinely spooky! I was happy when I realised I could walk faster on the subsequent playthroughs. I haven't been able to figure out how to get the "sleep" ending yet but I got the other ones.

Developer

I am really happy to hear that everything worked in the playthroughs. I am pretty sure that you can get the last ending, if you try more.

Submitted(+1)

Whoops, looks like I released a new plague. Well done for the timeframe you had, I'm looking forward to see what you add in. The first time I played it I didn't notice the monster hanging out on the right due to the route I took so it was nice seeing a couple different things each time I played. Great work.

Developer

Thank you so much for your kind words!

Submitted(+1)

very spooky atmosphere, but could use a faster pace with the walking sprite

Developer

Thank you for playing my game! I have explained what was the reasoning behind the slow walking speed in the previous reply. I totally understand that the game might be too slow, it is something I might need to change.

Submitted(+1)

Pretty interesting concept, I just hope I could walk a bit faster.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for trying my game. I absolutely understand that the player is slow, but after testing all movement speeds, I ended up leaving it really slow. Being slow and witnessing the beast being really quick, gave me that feeling of helplessness I wanted. I even wanted to add a gun in the mix but making it useless against the beast. In the end I might be just wrong, so I leave it at that.
Of course, since this is a jam, people might want to go through the game quickly. If you press select (Shift) during the GBJAM starting screen you gain extra speed. This is written in the description.

Submitted(+1)

Nice creepy game, I wish there were more getting chased by the monster. :D

Developer

Thank you for trying my game! That was the plan at the start but since time was really limited this was all I could make...

Submitted(+1)

Really creepy! Great atmosphere. The "sleep" ending was super unexpected!

Developer

Haha, yeah the sleep ending was more like a joke ending.

Submitted(+1)

Played twice but didn't get how to unlock a different ending and also the movement speedup didn't work  to play a third time. It was interesting, I really wanted to know more about what happened and how to unlock the other endings.

Developer

To use the speed up movement you need to press select (Shift) at the GBJam screen and you need to be quick since the screen doesn't stay for long. A tip of 2 of the endings is that you don't need to collect items for them. Nonetheless thank you for trying out my game!

Submitted(+1)

The horror works surprisingly well!

Developer

Thank you so much for checking out my game!
