This was ridiculously fun for a good 10 minutes! It required just the right amount of skill without being too difficult.
Good fun, thanks for sharing! The overhead bonking mechanic worked well, as a bit of a twist. To be honest I thought I was looking at a flappy-bird-like game before I started :-) The name is great, though.
This is the furthest I got. The choke point patrolling bird bonked me to death at full fish power. These situations feel really bad since it's pretty much up to luck if you get to proceed.
I found the constant need to mash the button a bit irritating after some time. Also had to switch to an awkward cross armed position to be able to mash fast enough with my primary hand.
The bonk detection seems very inaccurate and often feels unfair. That combined with the awkward movement mechanic and super fast enemy birds made it feel not great all the time. And the fact that you only lose power while flapping often meant that the "best play" was to just sit around doing nothing waiting for the enemy to be positioned correctly. And I don't think waiting is ever a fun choice.
The fish eating check also seemed a bit inaccurate. I think if the fish spawns in too close to the player, it doesn't trigger and you first need to go away from it. Not a big deal of course since there is no time limit or any other downside as you just need to walk a bit but it still feels a bit awkward.
The sounds effects were pretty funny but more variation would be really welcome. It's super easy to do in Godot too! Just record a few variations of your sample, slap them in a randomized audio stream resource in the audio player and you can even do slight pitch variation in that too. Even a slight pitch variation helps a ton since the ear doesn't get that used to identical repeated sounds. And of course having a background music to fill in the void would help loads too. Also some effects were missing a sound. Player bird landing, enemy bird jumps/bonks. Having sounds on everything makes it feel more alive. And now that I listened to them again, it seems you did have some variation in the step sound which by the way seems a bit loud in comparison to everything else.
I did get a new personal record of 24 though (got surprise bonked) so I couldn't get a more recent pic... Dunno how the difficulty progression works but seemed like I was pretty much only getting those fast birds anymore which made it really tricky to keep the meter up.
Anyways, good job! 👍
Thank you for the detailed feedback! I’m not 100% sure I’ll continue to develop this post-jam, but if I do I will certainly start with the issues you’ve identified.
Even if you don't, they're common things to keep in mind the next jam. That's the great thing about game jams. No matter how many you do, you always learn new things and improve in your craft.
my bird worked until level 12, but i enjoyed every flap on the way up. this game is how i would describe what a jam game is to someone who never touched any before. quick, fun, great programmer art, amazing sfx. well done!
Thank you, what a nice, day-brightening comment!
I eat fish and it sounds like im eating sushi...love that.
My space bar is damaged though. But i love the game and i feel like it can be something really good but don't have any idea how...
And i didn't see any waves...maybe the way other birds move?
honestly I didn’t really pay mind to the theme until the game was done. Wings Against Vicious Enemies?
I like the slurp sound when you get a fish, cute game!
I think if you make the jump mechanic more intuitive this would be really fun. Pretty cool either way!
I loved the SFX, but at one point I did get stuck on some terrain. Overall a little repetitive, but I could see this being a genuine steam game with some work.
I can't get them to drop any fish for some reason. I've tried 'bonking' them from above and below but they never dropped their fish.
That’s a bummer– I’ll have to test some more.
