cool game, very interesting game mechanics.

Cool game, controls were difficult though.

Fun and surprising gameplay! Great job!

Submitted(+1)

Good start! How are you going to make the multiplayer? Just curious.

Developer

There is currently a local 2 player pvp mode, and I can expand that to many players each on their own screen connected through user hosted servers on steam!

Thank you!

Neat little game which reminded me of the Atari 2600 tank game. I wish the shots lasted longer and that I had more control of left/right so I could make use of the wall bounce more rather than directly shooting at things, but otherwise pretty solid little game.

Developer

Thanks! Some later levels and the default battle arena mode use black bouncy bullets which can bounce many times and last longer! The tank can only be at 32 different angles to make wall glitching easier, and also to encourage positioning and wall bouncing, so that's why you can't get super precise angles and have to dodge around instead.

So many levels, but they still felt unique. Cool game mechanics, fun game to play. Controls are a bit hard, but it makes sense and adds to the challenge.

Great work!

There's a lot in this game! The controls are kind of tricky but I think that's just part of the challenge. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it past the first boss. There were just too many bouncing bullets and I wasn't able to dodge them skillfully. Still, the core gameplay is pretty fun! Nicely done.

Developer

I am glad you like it! There is an easy difficulty in the settings if you wanna beat the boss, or if not you can skip it by selecting level 9 after hitting the campaign button, though they do get pretty tricky starting around there ;)

Ah I didn't see the difficulty settings, I might give it another go!

Great graphics and amazing sounds clearly  I can see how much effort you put into this game I mean 10 powerups and 24 levels WOW.

great work.

Developer

Thanks, I am glad my effort paid off!

Interesting concept about glitching through walls!

Woah great game! The wall-glitching mechanic works   well and combined with the seamless level design  it creates nice depth to    battles and even more chaos with all those powerups.   What really stands out for me is the sound design.   I played a bit longer just to listen to the  game soundtrack loop.  The powerup also sound satisfying. I was amazed when I was sniped by a tower shooting a rocket across the level to end me with a bang! Good job!

Reminds me of the tank game on the Wii haha! Great job lots of fun and difficult! It would be cool for you to make a sequel! The only occasionally frustrating thing was sometimes the glitching through walls didn't work perfect, but then I figured it only worked at a 90 degree angle! but still great game!

Developer

I just added a feature in the settings (on by default) that makes it much easier to pull off the wall glitching in tough situations (you still have to go at a 90-degree angle, but it is harder to cancel once you get going). Check it out and lemme know if this helps with the frustration :)

Just tried it again and to me that feels a lot better! Thanks for fixing that and good work!

I used to play a tank game like this decades ago, thanks for the nostalgic feeling. I love the destructible terrain and didn't love me shooting myself but thats just my skills, lol. Very nice game overall.

This game was pretty fun! I really enjoyed the seamless level design; it gave the levels a kind of portal-style puzzle aspect.

One thing I did have a bit of difficulty with was movement/glitching, I didn't find any difficulty in the tank relative movement itself, but during tense battle moments, lining up the tank perpendicular to the wall was a bit difficult.

The special power-ups were super fun to use as well.

Overall, a very fun and well-designed game!

Developer

I am experimenting with a feature that stops you from overshooting (turning too far) when lining up wall glitching, if I get that finished I will send a reply here so you can check it out. I am glad you like the wrapping, that was a lot of fun to implement!

Developer (1 edit)

I used your feedback and have completed the wall glitching helper! When you start a wall glitch it makes sure you don't cancel it, all you need to do is run into a wall and hold forwards (it is rather OP).

Played it again today and it feels a lot better! Nice work!

Lucky for you, I found the death explosions REALLY satisfying... because I died... a LOT.  Apparently, my and driving a tank don't mix. I tried and tried, but my fingers and my mind could never fully get in sync to drive my tank like a boss. I suppose that means I just need more practice ;-)  Oh, also, I loved the big 'ol explodey gun. That was satisfying to shoot... even if I did kill myself more than my enemy!  Well done!

Developer

Thanks! If you are ever feeling like you wanna play through the campaign without as many deaths, I added a difficulty option in the settings, but even the Easy mode requires a decent amount of mastery to destroy your enemies :)

Bullets bouncing is a nice "gotcha" moment as well as double edge sword as they can get you so easily. I like the wrapping effect which I think really sells the theme more of "something is not working quite right"

Developer

Thanks! I'm really proud of the wrapping, because screenwrap is such a classic video game mechanic, but the camera is never allowed to watch as the character goes from one side of the screen to the other. It was really fun to work on :)

The game was very challenging for me! I think what wouldve made it a bit easier was of W,A,S,D directed the tank in those directions rather than the direction the tank was facing. I might’ve missed it but I wasn’t too sure what the bug element was but maybe that happens later during the levels since I couldnt make it too far because I lack MLG skills :c

Nice work getting this submission out - Will def try it out once you adjust the difficulty, nice work!

WHOOPS the second level which teaches you wall glitching is bugged, one sec!

Developer

Super sorry about that, now when you beat the first level, it brings you to the second one! Half the levels were skipped on the version you played due to a BAD bug, and now you can get to the level that teaches you how to glitch through walls. There is actually a powerup called wings, which makes WASD direct the tank as you describe. There is also now a difficulty option in the settings menu, but I think when you played it the fact that half the levels were missing made the difficulty curve brutal. I have fixed these issues, so I would be happy if you checked the new version out! Thanks for the feedback, I wouldn't have found the missing levels so fast if you hadn't said something!

tldr: whoops half the levels were missing, and they taught you how to glitch through walls

Submitted(+1)

Oh no! I’m sorry about that bug - I will try out the updated version, thank you for fixing that so quickly! Very dedicated, you love to see that. Them bugs do happen, lord knows we’ve got plenty in our game unfortunately (we’ll just call them features though hehe) :D

Nice game! I really liked the music and sound effects, they really enhance the gameplay experience. I think the game is a bit difficult though. Or maybe I just need more practice.

Developer(+1)

I think you are right about it being difficult, I have received this feedback from many people. I am working on fixing the difficulty of the campaign, and will reply here once it has been uploaded!

Developer

Added a difficulty system, as well as a few other changes! More info here: https://github.com/WAEliasmith/BugTanks/commit/05e401b362516fbf3a21e1267f5c89a9c...

I played it again, and it feels a lot better with more hearts. Adding the difficulty system was a great idea!

Submitted

Really like the fact that you can watch the sequence on the main menu. Good music, good art. Unfortunately, I did find it a bit difficult :(

Developer(+1)

I added a difficulty button in the settings, and the default difficulty is a little easier than the last time you played. Check it out!

Submitted(+1)

Amazing, will do- thanks!

Submitted(+1)

I could totally see me and my friends playing this game and trying to kill each other lol.

Developer

How was the difficulty? I am thinking of adding another heart to the player in every campaign level, since I made 24 of them but most people don't get very far at all since the enemies are pretty strong.

Submitted(+1)

Was really hard the only way I did get to the end level was by going through there with the main menus. I think I heart every level would be too much. Maybe like every 3 or 5 levels. And maybe make an uncommon drop so enemies drop a healing item like a wrench so you can heal on the long level. Also, a bit of the difficulty may come from the bullets being a little hard to see sometimes.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, I meant increase the starting hp on all levels by 1. A healing item is a good idea, as that will keep levels tense since you can die before you get to the part with the healing. I might experiment with a light source on bullets, to see if that helps, or if that is too disruptive maybe colored pixels in the middle of the sprite. I am glad you enjoyed it!
