Good game, but sadly I couldn't go past the demon horde coming from both sides, when you have to move down the road. Whenever I reached the path downwards, the daughter started to shake on screen and getting stuck in the middle of the road. I tried it 10+ times with different paths, always the same outcome. I was playing the browser version on Firefox.

Also, I think your game page's itch.io theme is misconfigured. Text is black on black background, you can only read it when you highlight it all.

Developer(+1)

Shame, some others had the same bug but I can't reproduce it, I wonder how can I'll fix that.
Thanks for pointing out about the theme problem, I was using a dark plugin and didn't saw that.
Glad you liked the game nonetheless! Thank you for playing!

Amazing work! I managed to finish the game without issue (I see I arrived right in time after a potential game-breaking bugfix :D), though I must say the ending was a bit abrupt after the climax of being run after while in split controls. Actually arriving at a Moon Shrine scene with Ann and triggering a cutscene there might make it nicer - but I see the Git history and it seems the ending was added at the very last minute before the deadline ;)

Otherwise great work on all aspects, the gameplay works well (that split screen effect and ungrouping system are both quite nice and challenging), and the graphics and audio fit very well. I enjoyed the writing a lot, both characters have a lot of personality.

Kudos for a great entry!

Developer

Really glad you liked it, your comment means a lot!
I had in mind two more levels before the ending but time was short, so it's normal you feel like that. 😅
I'll be working on this after the voting period for sure.
Thank you for playing!

Ahhhhh this game is soo good but after somewhat 10-15 minutes into the game, I encountered a bug that stopped the game from progressing. When I failed to pass the sceptre from the shelter to Ann, the game does not progress anymore, but you can tell the game is still running because the sceptre still orbits around Gyna.

I love the stealth experience and especially the split-screen, trying to be stealthy at the same time/pass around the sceptre.

I don’t know how far I am into the game but I wish to see the ending…

The screen splitting is extremely fluent and seamless too! I would like to dig into the source code and find out how you achieve this. What tools did you use to build this game?

Developer(+1)

I made the game with Godot Engine, you can get the code from github and explore it a bit.
The camera split is a trick, it works rendering two viewports one in front of the other, then the front one has a shader which renders or not depending on distance and angle between the protagonists.
I hope you liked the solution and the code, leave more comments if you like.

Developer

In fact you almost finished the game! (Really, the next scene is the end)
I was able to replicate the bug and just uploaded a new release fixing it, sorry for that.
I'm happy you liked the mechanics and the general experience.
Thanks so much for playing, rating and commenting!

Very polished and very fun! I especially dug the sound design. Good Stuff!

Developer

Glad you liked it!
Thanks so much for playing and commenting!

I loved the point of the game where you split off and you have the split screen that connects when you were close, very impressive coding that! Was stuck for a big when the mobs came after me but eventually figured out I needed to run down haha. Really really good game without a doubt one of the best in the Jam! I pixel graphics worked very well with the moon witches theme

Developer

Wow, I'm flattered you liked it so much, thanks!
Making the split feel natural was hard and still has some minor bugs, like the 2D sound doesn't position well when the camera is split, but I think that's not game breaking enough to fix now.
Thank you for playing and commenting!

This game's charming, but I had the same experience as flavedogame and got stuck at the end because of a bug. The level kept restarting without me being able to move Gyna :(
I liked the mechanics and found the dialogue funny. Although controlling two characters at once during the demon chases was a bit confusing, I feel that the mechanics in general were a good fit narratively speaking. Also, the graphics are a bit bland, but still consistent and leave a lot to your imagination.

Developer(+1)

Hi remruts! I'm really glad you liked the game.
I finally reproduced the bug in local and have released a new version fixing it.
Thanks to all of you for pointing out, and sorry for the inconvenience.
And thanks so much for playing!

Submitted

That was quick! I'll give it another go later (or maybe tomorrow) and tell you what I think of the ending :)

Submitted

Finished it! For a while I thought "That was it?!". But then I read the ending text and I'm glad it has a happy ending :)

Developer(+1)

Sorry there's not much content after that point, but I was in a rush to finish the game for the jam deadline.
Glad you liked it, thanks for playing again!

Aghhh! I was so close to the end but get stuck at the level that the boy need to pass the scepter from the room to the girl. I really hope there is a persistent data saved for it or a restart button for a level :(.  Curious what happened next.

Other than that this is my favorite game for this jam! The stealth, the run, the puzzles, the path lighten by scepter, the split screen, ungroup and pass scepter, everything is perfect and smooth! I also like the girl's dialog, makes me laugh.

One minor thing I don't like with the split is the visible part for each player get too small and need to move very carefully to see if there are monsters. But that might be intended, so nvm..

I love this game a lot! If you would extend this game and make it a real game someday let me know!

Developer(+1)

Wow! You almost finished the game!
It's always great to hear comments like yours, I'm grateful and in awe with your reactions.
The screen space when splitting was too small, so we tried to fix this design flaw adding a looping sound to the enemies. But the camera still is a problem we need to fix in a future release.
I'm glad you liked it as much as I liked it making it! Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! I liked the way you progressively show the controls, very easy to learn. The graphics were effective, the audio was great, the pitched-up vocal sounds for the child were cute

Developer

Thanks! We put some effort introducing the mechanics smoothly, shame we couldn't make a final level with all of them at once.
I was afraid that the vocal sounds were too annoying or repetitive, but I'm happy to hear the opposite from you and others.
Glad you liked the game, thanks for playing!

I wasn't able to use the scepter because I don't have a RCTRL key on my macbook air :(

Developer

You can also use the SPACE key to activate the scepter, but I think that's not clear enough during the on-screen tips...
Thanks for playing anyway!

Submitted(+1)

Really nice game! I love the minimal pixel art aesthetics, the narrative, the atmosphere created as well as the split control, it is a really awesome mechanic!

The only thing I had troubled with (and made me restart the game a couple of times :S) was that sometimes I pressed CTRL (scepter) + W (Gyna UP control) and the Chrome tab closed. But I made it through and I had a great time!

Well done!

Developer(+1)

Ouch! I didn't have though about Ctrl+W 😂
Thanks for commenting on this, I should change the bindings in the future.
So glad you liked it all the way to the end!
Thank you so much for playing and rating!

Honestly I was already hooked but when the screen splitted I lost it. I love the way it splits the screen in relation of where the characters are from each other, It's really clever!

The story was light but entertaining and well put together, perfect for a gamejam game.

PS: Yay for Godot :). I am wondering how you were able to have audio without delay in the web player, do you have any tips for me? As you can see if you play my game, everything is delayed by a second.

Developer

Hi! It's great to see more godoters in every jam, that's great!
The source code may be a bit messy but check it out and feel free to ask any questions.
I did sound and music mostly with AudioStreamPlayer2D and AnimationPlayer nodes.

Glad you liked the game, thanks so much for playing and rating!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I decided to take a look at your code and I found it very clean and I'm surprised by how little code there is (that's a good thing!). I'm thinking maybe you used audio files that were smaller in size and that's why you don't have a delay.

Developer

It may be about audio size, or even format. I worked hard to optimize the size of the background sound, OGG is amazing with large looped sounds, even with the lowest quality the loss is minimal. Also, for small sounds I'd use OGG without looping over a raw WAV file.

Submitted(+1)

Great game!!  The progression, the writing, the controls!  I just got hung up where it seemed I needed to control both characters at the same time???  I probably missed something, so I'm blaming myself on this one!  Seriously, very good, very thorough!

Developer

The split mechanic must have been explained just before needing it for the first time. Do you mean on the roadblock?
Glad you liked it and thanks for playing and sharing your concerns!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Really enjoyed the split control and split screen effect. Very nicely implemented!

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked the mechanics and the effect. I took some inspiration from a similar 3D effect and implemented my way. Has some drawbacks but I think it came pretty neat, if I may say so!
Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Cool game, the sound was really atmospheric and the characters were funny.

It froze up at the point I got to in the image.   It may have been me pressing too many buttons at the same time panicking about the demons!

Developer

Ouch! You were THIS close to finish the game!

I tried to optimize this part, as it's quite "physics intensive" but I might have broke something in the process.
I'll double check this and see if I can fix that, but congrats for getting this far!

Glad you enjoyed the game! Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Controlling both of the characters at the same time is such cool game design. The split screen was so cool! I absolutely adored the art, music, and charming characters too. Fantastic job all around!

Developer

We put a lot of effort into story, music and mechanics to get an enjoyable experience.
I'm really glad you liked it that much!
Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

I hit a bug when the two groups of demon hordes started to chase me where Ann froze and kept dying. Before that, I was totally digging the story and everything. Felt fun (and frightening) to play. Good job.

Developer

Oh, sorry, we had another comment about that bug but I can't replicate it. I'll patch it as soon as I find how.
Glad you like it! And thank you so much for playing!

Submitted(+1)

The split-screen mechanics were fantastic, and I really liked how you introduced controls and new things as you went along, then had scenes where you used those new things.  Great job!

Developer

I'm glad you liked how we introduced the mechanics, solutions were too hard or too invasive... I'm happy with the results. Hope you enjoyed the story as well! Thanks so much for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Loved it! Theme wise it's really cool to see a game which takes up a more feminist approach ;)

On my crappy machine the game crashed pretty rapidly... Sad for me. Congrats!

Developer

Wow, I wasn't aware the game was THAT demanding in terms of hardware.
Glad you liked what you saw, at least.
Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

I almost stopped playing right before the split screen part. After that, I was very very interested in the game and story. The atmosphere captured by the audio felt great. The game is so simple in terms of art, but it really felt right after I got invested in the characters and story.

I hit a bug at this screen and couldn't play anymore :( The characters were stuck at the left and the controls were completely disabled too. I left it running for 3 minutes just in case it gave me a chance to finish the game, but this was the end for me.

Developer

Really glad you liked the story and atmosphere!
At first the split mechanic was the central part of the game, but we found it was too hard, so we focused on story.
Thank you reporting this bug, as soon as I can I'll upload a fixed version.
Thanks for playing!

Developer

I think is fixed now, thank you for reporting!

Submitted(+1)

I actually really enjoyed it, Everything was meshing well together and the story was pulling me through. But I got a bug when running from the horde where the girl following me would glitch out and lag behind causing both to die every single time haha. But up to that point it was fun

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Oh! This happened in previous tests, but we thought it was fixed!
I will take a look and try to fix it and upload it again.
Thanks for playing!
