  • Yes! This is what the other entries that ported other games over to the engine needed. It isn't just Picross. The visual novel structure having a plot that gives a reason for solving the puzzles is great, the writing isn't stellar but serves its purpose more than well enough. The game's execution to show off this idea is great and a lot of effort has gone into this and it really shows. Giving players an introduction to Picross helps a lot. Would play a full length game of this kind.
  • Great submission overall, really the only thing I can say is that for a Picross beginner like me it took a while to get the hang of it so the whole thing took me about an hour and a half to beat. But still, the UI was really clean and I enjoyed figuring out the puzzles. I couldn't really follow the story very well but I was still pretty invested in the characters and the world. Definitely one of the better submissions from a writing standpoint as well.
  • Puzzle Over is a game based on Picross/Nonograms. Aside from it, it features a short story about a researcher who is using Sigils to save his country while the Sigils are the Picross puzzles the player must solve. It is faithfully recreated in SRPG Studio, but the concept of the game might be a bit hard to understand if you never played it before. But once you learn how it's played, you would enjoy a very fun pictogram game. I'd recommend looking for the rules of Picross before getting into this submission. Unlike other entries revolving puzzles or board games, this one features a plot built around it and several custom assets, making this particular entry stand out on its own. The only problem with the entry would be the lack of an step by step tutorial (which understandibly would be pretty hard to implement) for those who doesn't know how to play this particular puzzle game. Aside from that, it's a solid entry. Would Recommend.

Any information the judges should know?
I estimate play time to 30 minutes if you know Picross. If you don't and find yourself stuck...
Well I'd have failed my tutorial but check this video series out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zisu0Qf4TAI

This was really impressive! It almost didn't feel like an SRPG Studio game except for the little unit on the Picross board, haha. The UI works quite well, the only criticism I have is that there's no "mark "option, but I made do. The puzzles were quite fun and surprisingly challenging. The story was a bit complex for such a short game though, and I had trouble remembering all the exposition, which made it a bit confusing. It seems like it'd be fun if it were a longer game though.

Thank you for playing and leaving a comment!

By a "mark" option, do you mean something other than a black or crossed-out cell to count?  It would be useful, but I'm not sure how I could implement it. And if someone was thinking about a dragging option to fill, this just isn't in SRPG Studio, haha.

You actually did my first comment on the story. I was a bit worried about it, especially as I chose not to do exposition dumps. Seems like it was a miss in the end. To give context:

  • Galdi and Mirela are researching a volcano that requires sacrifices to stay asleep at Kali's request.
  • Kali's family selectively reproduces to have sacrifice candidates and get the perks of sending people off to die (including money from the country).
  • Sigils are how magic flows in places, items and people. Which one a person has determines which others they can use. Being a potential sacrifice to the volcano requires a specific Sigil.
  • As said in the extras, the Vigil Force that Kali is part of is kind of a mix of police and firefighters.

Yeah, I meant a third thing to mark. I tend to use them to draw lines to find the symmetry more easily. I just used X'es for it and removed them afterwards, which worked just fine.

It seems like you put a lot of effort into the worldbuilding, which is impressive, but it's hard to get that across in a gamejam game. I got the gist of it, at least the general relationships between characters, but had some trouble putting some lines into context. I hope you'll find use for it in the future for a larger project.
