Thank you everyone for your kind and genuine comments, and for giving this little project a try! I'm hoping to have a new version out soon that fixes its many problems!
Cool!
I tried this a half dozen times and I don't get it.
The instructions seem to be a lie. (instruction says left click, but space places bridges for me)
Combat? depletes my brains so that I can no longer place any bridges. Combat doesn't seem to follow any rhyme or reason as to whether lining up colors from the recalls is supposed to remove those same colors or not.
Some brains seem impossible to line up and so can't pick them up
I have no idea what causes the switch between the light and dark space.
It looks interesting and I'd like to like it but I just don't really understand it.
ok after playing a bit more I've figured out the difficulty with lining some stuff up. The collision is actually detected some distance behind where it appears to be with the camera. If you stand next to a brain/memory and turn away from it, you will pick it up. I still don't understand combat (at one point I was at -34hp, then jumped to 55 when I beat the enemy), or what causes switching between pink/green floor, but I did figure out I can avoid most combat using that map you posted in another comment and collect all 9 memories. Which results in the program just closing?
Overall looks interesting and I feel like there could be more to it, but it needs some work.
I apologize for the very late reply. Thank you very much for trying out my entry! Yes, there are many problems and I rushed this out to make the deadline, and I'm sorry about that. I plan to correct everything wrong and release a new version in the near future!
This was a very interesting game, the visuals are really weird and cool, and the combat/movement mechancis are unique but man are they really weird to figure out.
It took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to how to fight or build bridges to the other areas, hell I didn't even know I WAS in combat for a while. But once I figured out you needed to drag and drop the blocks onto the green squares to fight and press spacebar to build the bridges then it started to make more sense.
I do think the lack of audio hampers the game a bit, even some basic creepy ambient background music or some weird distorted bleeps and blips would be good.
I also sadly never got to the 9th memory because I played before reading your explanation in the comments.
I should say again how much I like this concept though, a digital hellscape mind adventure is a great idea for a dungeon crawler! Good work!
Interesting game! I had trouble figuring out some mechanics, although I think that was partly due to me having the bad luck of running into an enemy just as I reached the end, so I thought it was some sort of bridge-building minigame to reach the other side instead of some combat scenario.
Once I figured it all out, it felt like it had the potential for an interesting mechanic, although it was pretty clear that you ran out of time. I would to see what this looks like with a day or two more of development!
It took me about 2 hours but I eventually did it! Given you're starting facing north it's the north eastern one that you might miss, I think the platform is too far to see from any other one, I had to map the game then just restart a few times rushing into one direction to try to figure out where it could be.
At first some pieces seem almost impossible to take and even when you got it you don't get how, that's really confusing until your realise that when trying to walk across a piece won't work then just turning 360° near it will work, then it flows.
Building bridges is cool, and so is the combat system (and I think it could still work great in a bigger game too), I really wish there was a way to walk faster though'.
In the end I had fun with the challenge of finally finding all the pieces, thanks for sharing the game.
This ran on linux via wine, but I didn't hear any sounds. Thats probably wine. I really like the rotation effect and the fractal skybox. What was this programmed in? The combat is unusual in a good way, I really enjoyed it. Thanks!
Thank you everyone for playing! I know it is very, very rough (I even left the debug info on the screen!!). It's interesting some got the virus flag because anytime I work on a game with similar code to this one I have to make an exception with my antivirus or turn it off entirely to test it, so I'm sorry you're getting warned about it but I promise you there is no virus! For those who can't find the 9th piece, maybe this map will help:
This was a fun experience, but, I can't seem to find the 9th piece no matter what I do, maybe look that up!
Really hard to understand how battle works and picking up brains felt clunky. Though concept itself is a very nice indeed. Bit more explanation though could do so much good for that one!
I managed to collect 8 memories, but couldn't seem to find the 9th?
Collecting the memories and brains was a bit too hard, I had to shift the view multiple times to get them to line up.
The combat was interesting at first but I think the group of green squares in the top right trivialised it a bit.
I like the concept of building bridges between islands.
I would be very interested to see the source code for this game, it appears to be using my flogging my CPU for all the rendering taking place.
As for people's virus concerns, it is likely that the creator didn't want to pay the ransom to antivirus companies to get the game whitelisted, and probably also didn't want to pay the ransom for the Microsoft code signing certificate. Which is entirely understandable to me.
I didn't play the game due to all the virus-threat hassle, but I love this concept and it's filling my mind with all kinds of ideas for possible projects of my own, so good job on that part!
Got a virus warning from my anti virus so I'm afraid I won't be taking the risk of playing this game.
