Excellent choice of tileset. Are you a DCSS fan?

  • Barret Boulderfist AKA the Jawline, is a monstrous force to be reckoned with! I really enjoyed crushing my enemies! They felt my wrath! It was quite satisfying :)

  • Really solid game here. Very nice pixel art. The art for Barret doesn’t quite mesh with the rest of it, but I’ll just pretend it is the box art ;)

  • I think the FOV was a bit far back and made the ground / walls look a bit stretched out.

  • More music tracks would have been nice but the one track was nice and soothing / didn’t clash with the game play.

  • A few weird things where the camera would go flying through an area when I entered a new location, but didn’t seem to be game breaking.

  • UI would sometimes seem to get stuck, but clicking on it seemed to fix the issue.

Overall, a solid entry. Clearly a lot of energy went into it. Great work!

Really nice!  Those graphics look familiar ^_^.  I had my warrior die against the midboss and, despite talking to him with my druid, and him kindly requesting heals, I could never figure out how to heal him.  Unfortunately, the lone druid was not enough to defeat the final boss.  It also took me a very long time to figure out how to switch characters, since the on-screen help said /, however the key was actually \ =).

Nice musical variety too!

Really interesting in a duality based on a mage and warrior class. The music and SFX were great too!

Looks very good and I liked the sound of the world very much. Great little entry. Didn't finish it though, was not my taste really, and when I died it took very long until I got the death screen, if I put in any input the sound would reappear and I think it took longer then.

Thanks for playing. I was thinking it would be amusing to replay the death sounds if you tried to do more actions while dead, but I can see how it might be annoying.

Interesting making it in javascript instead of the usual game engines. Works pretty well.

Interesting entry, it looks and sounds really great! The mechanic of spawning in as a your apprentice is a really interesting idea. I think the world itself and the textures and lighting is all really intense and immersive, and I'm a sucker for any game where you start in a friendly town that you can explore for lore and info.

The only issue I really had is that the last time I played I got hit by a strange bug when I died where I guess I had buffered to many inputs and the respawn window flashed up for a second and then I was soft locked. I also was often buffering to many inputs and suddenly flashing forward and running into walls over and over again.

Nice entry!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. I also like the town level the best.

For the input buffering, you should be limited to a queue of about three commands, but the game should run about as fast as you can hit the keys. Do you think you just jumped too far ahead before the visuals caught up?

Looks great and very feature rich! The movement easing wasn't my favorite. The level builds, graphics, and feel of the world were fantastic IMO.

Developer

thanks! Any technical tips on doing the movement easing?

Submitted

Hmm good question. I didn't do easing for mine to save time on the jam, it was easier to not have it but I would say specifically what I didn't like was this:

* If I hold forward it's a long time before I move, then I run forward with a ton of moves queued up and end up continuing forward long after I let go of the key. I think if a player holds down forward it means they want to just go and then stop when they let go of the key. I would only recommend queueing up moves if a player types in a lot of keys. So for holding the key down I would make it start the player movement faster but don't queue up keys, instead let the player go forward until they let go and then stop.

* The main thing was that the character moved very quickly then slowed down over a somewhat long time. Like if you watch carefully when strafing sideways you'll see the character slides into position like they are on ice. I recommend getting they camera most of the way there with a continuous movement speed then dropping off the velocity very fast or just stopping immediately (but allowing it to continue of you have another move queued up). Here is a clip of (in my opinion) it being done really well: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxIFvQyBmCCvvNucdpPhY0P65nbYT-lEct

This issue (second bullet point) made my a bit queasy playing the game on my TV (I was sitting pretty close, it was a very large display) so I had to stop playing. I intend to give it a second play through on a smaller screen when I have time.

I think I completed the game, though' I cheated, I did not talk to the boss so he could not fight back. I run into a situation where my commands did not respond anymore after that (I think it happened another time before) so I am not sure if there is in fact more, if we're meant to kill the mosquito, especially.

I like the choice between two characters, including the second one effectively acting as an extra life. I died a couple of times before using strafing efficiently. One character chatting with the ghosts of dead enemies in cool, and the warped door line is hilarious.

The game was almost unplayable on Firefox and worked fine on Chrome for me, in case it can help someone else.

Overall the game is fun and I enjoyed it.

Thanks for playing! We just fixed a few bugs, including the boss not getting aggro'd. Even though there isn't any sort of "win" state, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Cool, I am happy for you that you had the time to fix the boss not attacking, it was a bit of a shame since the game is pretty cool otherwise.
