Game Title
Restoring Harmony

Developer Name
Team 1-S

Short Promo Blurb
Use cards to reverse the harms of deforestation and restore harmony to the environment. Manage your time wisely as rising waters threaten to erase your progress and thwart your restorative efforts.

Full Description
Find harmony within the environment, right wrongs by restoring and restructuring islands facing rising sea levels, and be the necessary change needed to address the climate crisis.

By placing objects dependent on the environment (e.g. trees, greenery, houses, buildings, etc.), create the most harmonious configuration on the map before the water rises and washes everything away. Work against time and the environment to restore and reconstruct a climate conscious world.

Artistic Statement / Use of Theme(s)
Our game focuses on the narrative that, while not all hope is lost, unless direct action is taken, irreversible consequences will occur. In our case, this means rising sea levels and losing land to the ocean. The game starts with somber music in a trash-filled and unhealthy environment. The player then plants trees and flowers, removes the trash, and creates a more sustainable environment. The music changes to a more hopeful tone. By adding procedurally generated content, we illustrate that every island faces its own challenges and there is no single fix, but we should at least try to make a difference. Finally, if the player runs out of cards and the water level hasn’t yet reached the top, they are given a “Don’t Give Up” bundle, reiterating that the fight for sustainability and restoration isn’t over until it’s truly over.

Development Summary
Our team faced many challenges throughout the jam. We originally came together with the idea of making a floating city builder. The concept evolved over time with much discussion, prototyping, and scope management. Partially inspired by games like Cloud Gardens and ODDADA, we decided to create a casual, strategy-focused game. However, due to a lack of time, we were unable to fully flesh out the card mechanics. We are a team of eight, but one member left our group, so we had to find a replacement. We had to cut additional gameplay mechanics, extra environments, adaptive music, and more to adhere to the jam timelines. We tried to combine multiple game ideas into one while maintaining coherence, which made finding the right balance challenging.

Release Plan
We are not entirely sure if we will continue adding additional content to the game but will plan to fix any major bugs, visuals, and mechanics as necessary after release. We are open to hearing people’s thoughts about our game and potential directions it could go in.

This game is well polished! Love the attention to detail on the UI, being able to customize controls, audio, and the little easter egg with clicking on the Earth in the middle. The gameplay loop makes sense and is pretty intuitive. I really love the detail with the music as a fellow composer/sound designer, with the music adding additional layers as you progress.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! Glad so many aspects of the game (UI, UX, Music, etc.) stood out to you! :)

This game is super cute and really aligns well with the theme of the jam! The gameplay is clear, and the connection to climate change is easily understood which is great! Unfortunately, I noticed it was a bit heavy on my computer, causing some lag, especially when placing cards causing me to click multiple times to try and place the plants. The low poly models are charming and fit together nicely.  Overall, it's a nice concept and I love what you have created! Amazing work!

Developer

Thank you for playing! Thanks for also pointing out the lag issue. Were you playing on web or the downloadable version? Either way, I'll bring up this issue with the programmers of the team.

I love this game, especially the UI/UX, which is well-designed! The tutorial level is a bit confusing without additional information provided. Overall, I love how thoughtful the team is regarding the gameplay and the theme!

Developer

Thank you for playing our game! Could you be more specific on what was confusing about the tutorial level, what was missing? If you haven't already and would like to provide more information on where to improve/general thoughts, feel free to fill out this survey. Thanks!

This game is nice to play. The theme of the game looks good to me. Only one thing, I didn't need the flowers much though, since the trees and buildings values seem to be a bit too powerful for me.

Developer

We're glad you enjoyed playing our game! Thank you for the feedback, we'll definitely look into adjusting the values of everything if we decide to further polish the game.

This looks amazing! This is definitely going to do well you've obviously put a lot of work into this. I love the gameplay it's simple and engaging and just plain interesting! i really enjoyed it!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! Really glad that you enjoyed our game and thought so highly of it! :)

This game has a really impressive level of polish, I like the consistent art style and the fast level of play. My one suggestion would be to simplify the win/lose mechanics a little bit, or perhaps give a more in-depth tutorial. The fact that you were able to build some procedural generation is amazing.

Developer

Thank you for playing our game and for the input! Could you go more in-depth on what you mean by "simplify"? Also, what do you think was missing from the tutorial? Interested to hear your thoughts.

Very calm and vibey, but almost too calm - I never felt like I could lose on any level. The cards would also often be off of the screen!

Developer

OOh i think thats a new bug were you playing on the windows version or a downloaded version in regards to the bug with the cards?

Cons: not a single level is challenging (or I'm naturally good, hah), hand cards quickly spread outside of the screen without ability to scroll through them (on 1920px width), and it wasn't clear if "next to" includes diagonal adjecency. Pros: pretty much everything else, lots of improvements since the prototype, high polished game with great atmosphere and main idea. Like mentioned, it needs some proper challenge to be an addictive game, as it is now it does a good job of being short&pretty climate issue informer. In any case, admirable achievement for a jam game, I'm sure this took quite some effort to be put together. Oh, and love the graphics.

Developer

Thank you for playing our game! While it is definitely possible to lose while playing, we unfortunately did not have time to fully flesh out the different chard mechanics to add more variety/strategy/difficulty to the game. We'll try to fix this in any future updates (along with the card scroll issue and confusing descriptions). If you haven't already and have any other suggestions or comments, feel free to fill out the second survey on the game page-- anything helps!

Despite its shortcomings, we're glad you thought positively of our game!

im a huge fan of deckbuilding games so i loved seeing sea level adaptation represented thru those mechanics! i liked how the use of structures in certain areas, such as the concrete blocks in water, shows to players that these are useful for mitigating sea level rise

i think a big issue for me was not being able to scroll thru cards when there were 6 or more, which made their descriptions unreadable. other than that, it's well-polished, with nice UI, music and fun flavor text!

Developer

Thank you for playing our game and glad you enjoyed it! The problem with the cards was an issue we unfortunately discovered right before submission and weren't able to fix before the deadline. It will for sure be fixed in any future updates!

Love the art style and music of the game! I also enjoyed playing the cards and planning how to use the cards in hand strategically. Can't wait to see this game fully released.

Developer

Thank you! Happy to hear that you enjoyed the strategic element of the game. We will definitely let you know if any future work is done! :)

I liked the turn-based mechanic, where you have to balance out how to continue to achieve your goals with the different sets of cards you have. The gameplay loop is entertaining and engaging. One minor nitpick I had was with the cards. When I have too many cards, I can't reach the ones at the end (they just got cut off due to the screen size). There might be some controls to allow me to scroll through the cards, but I couldn't find it. Other than that, really cool game!

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed our game! Yes, the issue you pointed out is a known bug and will most likely be addressed in the first batch of bug fixes.

Thanks for playing!

I love the art style and the game play of place things on island to achieve harmony . I think adding cards that can cause disharmony like a coal plant and fasten sea level rise but give players  more  bonus/resources can add depth to the game design .  I also had a hard time place cards since the controls for placing can quite finicky

Developer

Thank you for playing! We have received similar feedback on the the card controls and if we decide to further develop our game, it will be something we definitely address at that point.

Would you like to try out our game and leave some feedback

I really liked the music and art in your game. The way you encourage players to strategically place trees, flowers, etc., to mitigate sea level rise due to climate change aligns perfectly with the theme of this Jam. As for suggestions, as a player, I would appreciate more feedbacks on whether my actions are positive or negative, so I can understand if I’m doing well or not. Overall, the game is very well completed, and I really enjoyed it. Good job!!!

Developer(+1)

Happy to hear that you enjoyed our game!

While there aren't really any negative actions that will cause you to lose points (this was deliberate as it seemed counterintuitive), your suggestion of having more feedback on how your actions are being scored (base points vs. max points), makes sense. We had plans on adding additional visual and audible distinctions to this, but did not have time to fully implement unfortunately.

If we continue to develop our game, along with any bug fixes in the future, we'll be sure to include this.

Thank you for the feedback (and for playing!) and if you didn't already fill out the survey, feel free to share any additional suggestions/comments here! :)

Sure thing! If you guys plan to finish the full version, please let me know when it’s going to be released. I can't wait to play the complete game! It's truly impressive that you’ve achieved this level of quality in such a limited time—great job!

This game was an absolute blast!

I personally love the idea of the turn-based enviornment. I understand the message of harmony between the enviorment and people, but wish there was more of a connection with the music so the player could year the land and people "harmonizing".

Overall a beautiful and fun strategy game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for the kind words! We're really glad you enjoyed our game.

We were viewing harmony in the context of that a healthy environment is a varied environment (like how mass-planting a single tree species is not a good way to address/revert deforestation).

However if we decide to further develop our game, we'd for sure love to create a stage focused around finding a sustainable balance between people and nature.

If you experienced any bugs or had any additional comments about our game (good, bad, missing features, etc.), feel free to send them along in the second survey link on our game page (if you haven't already).

Thanks again! :)
