Pretty original blend of genres.
The game feels quite polished overall, and i like the presentation, the background looked nice and wan't too distracting to focus on the gameplay and dialogue, the Ui is clean and well thought out.
I like the writing and humor in this, those reference jokes dude haha XD, especially "Faucet Games" as a long time HL fan that had me both smiling and at the same time... *Triage at dawn starts playing*
Gameplay wise it's solid you can move the player indicator with ease and given the story's context you can instinctively guess that you have to dodge droplets and collect hearts,
now there is a small issue i think, the player hitbox maybe a bit large to fit through certain patterns and while there was no need to make a perfect run with no hits here, if you plan to add to the game and have more difficult segments this could become an issue :( Lastly the patterns here were a bit same-y i feel though the difficulty is fine, but i assume this is mostly due to jam time, and if you intend a post jam version this could be an ok start and introduce more complex patterns as the story progresses.
Other than that no issues, everything ran smoothly, and the game within a game with that pong phone minigame has to be commended :o
So overall cool game, it has potential and a strong base in place if you wish to expand it post jam, Good job :)
A very unique combination of genres! [got good and bad endings]
Few things to note:
- Bullet patterns were rather samey, perhaps more variety to both how the bullets fire and where your actual dodging zone is located?
- Being able to “finish” a line of text with a button rather than skipping over it entirely would be nice, especially because…
- …skipping through dialogue at all tends to make patterns start stacking on top of each other.
- The player’s movement is rather weighty, making it a little hard to change direction on a dime.
- The player can “roll” down a wall if you approach one at an angle and press against the direction of the wall.
You know, this may well be the best hybrid of a bullet hell game, a block breaker game, and a raccoon dating simulator hybrid that I've ever played.
This is a great idea, and I had a big goofy smile on my face basically the entire way through. I'd love to see this one developed further. The gameplay is fairly simple and perhaps a bit too merciful, but with a longer story, there's plenty of time to introduce more complex patterns.
The dating sim + bullet hell with the anxiety meter concept is really cool, but the execution has some issue.
The bullet patterns feel same y, and too easy, with a lot of hearts. It could have been cool if it was a bit more difficult, so you wouldn't have to lose on purpose to see the bad ending. The story is quite slow too, and we would have wanted to see more, and with more jokes to really go in the troll / funny racoon path.
But with those problems fixed, you can have a really fun game :)
Fun idea to fuse a dating sim and a bullet hell together! I haven't played Undertale yet, but it still reminds me of it. The basic mechanics work very well, and the anxiety square was a fantastic idea. I felt that the story dragged a bit, but I wouldn't consider myself as a target customer for this kinda game, so take my comment on that with a grain of salt. The idea of healing and damaging bullets was cool, I was hoping to see more different patterns! Very creative and interesting submission overall.
Would appreciate a lof if you had time to check out our game as well :)
I'm gonna join the masses in telling you that this game is fantastic! The adorable racoon also really helps with that.
The only criticism I have is that the hitbox is a little bit to big wich makes it hard to dodge patterns that you really should've survived!
You also could just spam spacebar whilst aiming for red bois and almost always get the good ending... If you want to!
Very creative, I love it! The game was also very well made and I loved the concept!
Really creative idea, thought it was a great spin on the bullet hell genre, also loved the pointless phone game :D
Really interesting concept, and I couldn't stop my doki-doki felling when Simon blushed :D.
J4F: There is a Yaoi Jam that I think u should submit this game as well XD
I think a dating simulator was the last thing I expected to see at this jam hahahahha
Very creative concept! loved the idea of getting different endings based on how well you do at evading the bullets! Genius!
Fun game! Felt like Undertale. An improvement for the future might be to add a cool down for pressing spacebar so people can't rush through the whole game lol
Haha I completely love the narrative, the characters and the whole concept of this game. It's super creative and engaging. The bullet hell part was a little easy (too many hearts maybe) and there weren't many patterns, but wow I see this as something that could be expanded on.
The idea is great, Simon and John are lovely, and I'm pretty sure that with overall polishing and improvements on the bullet hell parts this game could be an absolute blast. I see that you still don't know yet if you're continuing development or not, but I'll definitely follow you on itch in case you do.
Well done!
The idea of a Visual novel x Undertale style bullet hell is really creative. I liked the concept and it could definitely be made into something really cool!
For the gameplay part - I do have some minor complaints, the player's hitbox felt inconsistent and I got hit when I thought I shouldn't get hit. If I remember correctly, Godot lets you do circular hitboxes right? So perhaps this issue could be fixed with some tweaking and testing for player and bullet hitboxes. Also, it took me a while to realize that you're not supposed to dodge red hearts, which I mean, makes sense right, the main character is actually really enjoying interacting with Simon, but yeah it would be neat if the narrator voice said something that hints at hearts being a bonus.
Though, I understand that the visual novel part of the game is the most important one you'll likely focus on, so it's okay if the dodging part is not perfect. I'm curious to see how Escape The Date will grow in the future!
