How does you game fit the theme?
--- About the Game ---
Rougelite adventure game. Reality has been shattered. Fight enemies to collect reality shards to restore things. Four enemies to fight plus a boss!

--- How to Play ---
Click on the circles in the overworld to fight the next enemy.

In combat, roll dice at the start of your turn with the energy you have. Dice will come out of your bank. Hover over the dice in the tube to view the potential dice you can roll.

After rolling, drag and drop the dices into the tiles and then click on the rune to activate them. Different tiles have different effects, hover over the runes to read the description.

Once you have no more energy, you can end your turn and wait for the enemy to complete their turn. You can end your turn early to stockpile on energy.

--- About the Authors --
We are a team of three - two unity programmers (one does music too) and a graphics artist. Our team has interest in continuing the project so your feedback would be appreciated!

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, all of the code, music, and graphics were design from our team.

Bruh, those graphics were incredible! There was an issue with the UI in the menu and level select. Otherwise, this was really good. Great job. :)

The graphics are great. The art is beautiful and the animations smooth and nice! The music is also very good! Great work! The system for playing, including the UI and turn control, works well so good work with that too! Some feedback for further developement (though I realise you could not have time to do everything with such a tight deadline):

  1. Sound effects on attacks and UI would help a lot to make me understand what is happening. I think I ended my turn several times in a row in the beginning because I just didn't think the button did anything. The attacksw would feel much more satisfying as well!
  2. The font size of the UI was way too small on my screen.
  3. I didn't see any info on what new effects the new runes I could select had. I just picked one at random, which removed a lot of my agency. The ones I picked didn't feel useful at all (double damage but half the amount on myself plus damage raised to the power of status effects on the enemy (since I couldn't inflict any status effects)).  This meant I just played the whole game using basic attack and defend.
  4. Also I could do nothing about the enemies status effect attacks (peprhaps other runes could protect, but I didn't get them?).
  5. I never understood what it meant when I could choose between squares with no 1-3 on them. How did that affect anything?

Basically - make everything clearer to the user and allow more options and informed decisions for increased sense of agency! The art, music and game cycle is already there!

Hey thanks for playing and thanks for taking the time on an amazing review! We will be continuing work on this project so this is great stuff! Seeing you took a significant amount of effort on this review, I think its fair to do the same with my response!

  1. I totally agree with your point on this. Sound effects will help both with feedback and user satisfaction. We will certainty be adding it.
  2. I've seen this complaint a couple of times. I statically set the resolution for Itch.io (which in hindsight was a bad call). So I think a solution of increasing the font size and making it more scalable will fix this.

    1. This was one of those unfortunate time constraint things. This was at the top of our list to develop next, but simply ran out of time. It feels bad because it makes the reward system feel very meaningless in it's current state.
    2. There was a couple status effects you could apply to the enemy. Though, your callout is still valid because you have no way of knowing which rune you were picking for a reward. This certainty needs to be fixed!
  3. Hmm this is a going point. I don't think we did implement any of these so thanks for the suggestion! We will look into this one.
  4. This is unfortunately due to the bad UI for the rewards system. These are actually different dice with different faces. Of course, you would have no way of knowing this in the current state of things. The die faces also show up in a tooltip if you over the dice in the tube next to the energy indicator... again, it should be more visible. This needs to change (both in displaying dice in combat and rewards). Though, I think presenting this may be challenging, since it's a 3D object. I could just simply show each face side by side, but that feels like maybe not the best option. Any thoughts here?

Thanks again for the great feedback!

Thanks for the response! Ok, I didn't realize my dice were different (but I were suprised to see I sometimes got numbers higher than 6 - this explains it). Well, perhaps when you hover the dice you just get a "one row x cols" table folding out showing all the sides (unless you plan to have 20 sided dice, in which case you may have to make it a 5x4 grid, for example)?

Another thought. I ended up just rolling all my dice first, then activating one rune at the time with full knowledge of what my different numbers were. Now that I understand there will ve drastically different dice types, one thought is: Would it be more nervous and exiting if you had to use each dice before rolling the next? And should each rune only be usable once per turn? Perhaps this will call for more risk taking but also be more rewarding and more nerve wrecking?

A lot of promise with this. Love what you have so far!

Developer

Thanks! Our team will be continuing the project! :)

The art looks amazing! The interface looks great too, very polished and elaborate. And a turn-based combat game is a very refreshing type of game for this jam--it's the first one of this sort that I've played. I'm also impressed by the scope--a level map, multiple enemies, etc are really impressive for this sort of game.

But the mechanics are really hard to use. Particularly that, when you use a move, the die just disappears--the first few times I thought I'd somehow accidentally lost a move. Still, really fun overall.

Developer

Hey thanks for playing man! I appreciate the compliments, though I think we scoped too much, which leads into your complaint on the mechanics - which I agree.

The mechanics do need a lot of work - audio feedback, more animations, and just an overall better UI/UX. But your callout is interesting, I have not got that specific feedback yet. I think you are right, the dice shouldn't just disappear. Do you have any thoughts on how to improve this part? Maybe an animation for the dice going away or something?

Submitted(+1)

Nice game and nice idea. The graphics are very nice

I encountered some bugs with the game not loading between levels. Also the mechanics could use a bit mor polish. for example the life leech seems to be always better than the attack so maybe let the life leech replace the attack. Also I feel that there needs to be more response for the player on what is happening, so maybe some more animations or damage numbers.

Well done.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah I agree with your points. We need to get better effects (should have done more play testing). More animations and probably some audio feedback would go a long way too!

Submitted(+1)

Even though this gernra is not my cup of tea, I really enjoyed the game, Good Job

Rate mine please :)

Developer

Thanks for the review! :)

Submitted(+1)

I don't get the mechanic much though, but the graphic has impressed me. Great effort mate.

Developer

Ah yeah the interface needs more polishing, its hard to follow in it's current state. Thanks for playing!

This is really well done and gives off slay the spire vibes. The only issue i have gameplay wise is that you cant hover over the random runes you gain after each fight to see what they do, which means I wasn't able to properly build up a synergistic deck and just picking random runes instead. Unless its a bug where the hover text didnt appear. I do feel that the UI could be made bigger, the health bars at the top are pretty small and hard to look at.

I did also encounter bugs though, like the game freezing at times and i took multiple copies of a rune if i spam clicked a rune in the rewards screen. It seems that you made your WebGL build compressed, which can lead to issues like the game not being able to run on some web browsers (I couldnt run it on Safari and got an error message shown below). Load times would also be much longer, but that didnt get affected as much since this is only a 2d card game.

You can disable the compression settings here, and I recommend doing this for all unity WebGL games:

File > Build settings > WebGL > Player settings > Publishing settings > Compression format > Disabled

This is amazing feedback! Yeah it really is too bad you cant see the descriptions of the rewards - we had every intention of doing so, but ran out of time... if we just had one more hour to work on it! Sorry you encountered so many bugs.

Thanks so much for the feedback on the build compression. I will admit, I just tinkered with it until it works, so thanks for teaching me something new! Our team will be continuing the project (probably starting from scratch - the code base got out of hand) so this information will for sure come in handy.

Thanks for playing, and thanks for taking the time to give such solid and detailed feedback!

This game is super fun! I don't think it fits the theme super well, BUT, it is a great game by itself! I'd just suggest giving more impact to the attacks, but besides that, amazing game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Good suggestions. I agree, I doesn't fit the theme very well - we were going to make it more story based but ran out of time

Submitted(+1)

Great game ^^ had a whole lot of fun playing it, tho when you update it it would be nice to show some more impact from the attacks of the golem and the ennemies and maybe make a bit more interactive and engaging world map, but nonetheless excellent game ! great job :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Both your points are very valid, thanks for reviewing it!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

They said game jam, and my dude started making triple A titles, but seriously just by the screenshots you got my attention.
I dont know if it fits the theme much, but the game is really good overall,  and I enjoyed playing it, would love to see more and I wonder if you continue working on it because this definitely has potential to grow into a full game!

Edit: Just read the description and Im excited to see that you guys will keep developing this!

Developer (1 edit)

Haha! Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked it! In hindsight, it was far too ambitious... but since were continuing work on it, we're mostly viewing this as a soft prototype. We be sure to update you as the game progresses!

Submitted(+1)

it's a really good-looking game but I wish they were sound effects or music in the background

Developer

Thanks for playing. Sound effects are needed for sure!

Submitted(+1)

Nice illustrations and animations.

After wining the second fight and clicking on 3, the game got stuck.

Looks like you ran out of time, but the big missing for me here is the animation / sound / any feedback when you attack or defend.

Great work and congrats on your submission!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah you are right, we ran out of time.. submitted with 22 seconds left! But I agree sound and hurt animations would make it feel way more polished

Submitted

22 secs? you beated my 3 mins mark xP

Submitted(+1)

Very nice illustrations and very engaging gameplay. My only suggestion would be to add some feedback when the enemy attacks. Well Done!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! And totally agree, fair point

Submitted(+1)

The graphics are stunning really beautiful visuals! However I have this problem ,where I click the tile while it is empty, and the game crashes. It happened to me multiple times. It is the 3rd and 4th tiles that crashes the game. Other than that it is a really fun and challenging game!

Developer

Thanks for playing! We've been hearing that bug from multiple people, so sorry you are experiencing that!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game. Needs a way to click less, though.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Totally agree

Submitted(+1)

Although the game seems fun and made in-depth it could use some polishing. E.g. it would be nice to swap already placed dice rolls with other rolls from the deck - removing it from the rune and adding a new one to take its' place feels tedious. On the other hand, art is lovely - I really like the encounters art!

Developer

Thanks for playing! And good point! We actually did have a click system where dice would swap like you describe, but we switched it to drag and drop and adding the swap feature was a lower priority. But the good news is our team is going to continue working on the project. So it will be more polished for sure!

Submitted(+1)

The game has a lot of potential, but I think it would benefit from a small in-game tutorial. Also could've been me but I couldn't find any way to heal. I liked it overall, but I believe the sounds were too low.

Developer

Thanks for playing and good points! There was a heal rune, but it wasnt obvious. With more time, we'd like to make a better UI

Submitted(+1)

Very interesting game, but I wish there was more feedback towards the player. Something like sounds when something happens for example.

Please also play and rate our game! Thank you!
https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-7/rate/1420416

Developer

Great point! Im hoping to add sound too it as we are continuing work. I will for sure take a look at your game!

Submitted(+1)

I should have read the page before playing I was a bit confused about what to do at first ^^'. But the concept is very nice and with some feedback animation to make it more dynamic I could play again with great pleasure.
And the graphics are on point!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah if we had more time, I would have loved to make a tutorial, we'll be adding feedback animations too as we continue to work on it!
