How does your game fit the theme?
The "Final Broadcast" game fits the "Calm Before the Storm" theme by using the final hours before an impending disaster (like a meteor strike) as a period for reflection and preparation. The game allows players to experience this calm through choices about music and interaction with callers, mirroring the introspective time just before the chaos.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
The image used for the background was AI generated using Adobe Firefly. The songs featured in the game are from Pixabay and attributed within the game (with the artists name). Code written in HTML, JS, and CSS were mostly written by me, save for the loader in the loading screen (from CSS Loaders) and carousel code (From Jenning's code pen)

Wow, this is a very interesting game!

Desperate, bleak, sad, but also...hopeful?

I appreciate games where I can see pieces of the author. The game may be simple, but the idea behind it is really well thought. I liked the various soundtracks offered and the scenario of the game itself. This is not a game of who scores the best. This is not a game of who is the better one. This is a game where it's all going to end anyways so why care so much? Just...go live! (I liked the double meaning there!)

I appreciate there are many different endings, and the different choices given to the player to explore every possible answer. Only complaint, sometimes there were choices that meant mostly the exact same thing, it would be really nice to have some more variety!

Overall, a nice, inspiring game! Hope the best for this one, it's definitely a fresh experience.

"This is not a game of who scores the best. This is not a game of who is the better one. This is a game where it's all going to end anyways so why care so much?"

Woah... This was very insightful. You have a unique way of seeing things. I love that my game can be viewed this way. Thank you.

My state of mind when I was writing the script was, "When things are going down hill, I hope people will choose to offer kind words to support each other," so I imagined the DJ to be a patient, supportive entity  to calm the callers before the incoming disaster. This is probably why most of the DJ choices are of similar vein: they are meant to be encouraging and helpful.

But you're right, having more agency in the game would make it more relatable :) When I do update the game, I plan to re-think the algorithm so every single choice affects each playthrough and thus every player can get their own unique ending based on their play.

I'm glad you liked the double meaning of the Start button. I hope you go live. Continue to be creative. Think about philosophy. Share yourself to the world... while you still can :)

Wow I absolutely loved the backgrounds!! I got emotional at the writing too, the music, the outcomes, the premise... this was really well made. Thank you for your submission!

Developer

Thank for your thoughtful feedback and thank you as well for your submission! I hope this game jam had been a wonderful experience for you :)

Very Cool!

Developer

Thank you :)

Very good idea, very nice graphics, very good music, and very good UI. Very impressed. If I had to criticise one thing, it would be that the responses you can make basically are all the same, and that it would've been nice if you had given the player some agency by offering different choices.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your generous feedback. I'm also impressed with your game! I rarely enjoy card games, but yours was one of the rare ones :D

When I daydreamed this game (basically when my mind was wandering without thinking about technicalities and limitations), I actually wanted to apply Natural Language Processing (NLP) into the game. NLP is a topic I've been exploring in Computer Science.

When I have the time (and great motivation and determination), I envision this game to be a unique experience for each playthrough where every single choice and action within the game affects the rest. There will be an algorithm for generating different DJ responses based on the previous responses and even the songs played. With NLP, the final DJ monologue can be unique each time.

I apologise for the long rant. I'm just really happy that there are people who are engaging with this game even if it's just a portion of what I imagine it to be.

No worries! Sounds like a very ambitious and interesting project. If NLP integration becomes feasible to use in games, it could be a pretty cool way of fleshing them out and make them come alive, even if only used for things like RPG npcs. Best of luck!

That was really nice. The messages also were beautifully written. I hope you’re doing well knowing you have created a nice little game and all I can say is: Awesome job dude!

Developer(+1)

Thank you. It's very kind of you to wish me well. You did a wonderful job with your game as well given the time limit :)

Submitted(+1)

A cool interpretation of the theme with deep reflections and great style. I didn't find any problems or bugs, really great job!

Developer

Thank you! And I appreciate you testing for bugs XD I did find one bug though, but no one has complained so I will keep quiet :P

Creative approach to the theme, and good art assets.

Developer

Thank you :) I hope you enjoyed it (in a way)

Submitted(+1)

Very deep and true to the theme. I did not expect to play such an emotional game this jam. I like how deep the moods ran like this was deeply contemplated.

Developer

Thank you very much for your kind feedback. Having time to not get consumed with work did allow me to introspect a lot during the game jam. I hope the message was hopeful despite the depressing premise.

I am really inspired!! It is my dream to make deep stories dealing with death and meaning of life, pondering over why we even exist... Playing your game gave me a sense of clarity on how I should proceed with it. I am just happy people think about it like me. Really unique and bold take on the theme. I think you and you team should be proud of what you made. You got no time to be depressed since we are waiting for more (pun intended).

Kudos for making a wonderful experience which I will remember!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for your kind words ٩(。•́‿•̀。)۶

I'm happy my humble game inspired you. It'll be exciting to see what game you'd be making. I also love philosophical games (e.g. Disco Elysium)!

Submitted(+1)

Love how you used the theme, the little stories are well written, well done !!

Developer

I'm happy you enjoyed the caller stories. I actually prepared an overarching plot that would introduce more of the DJ character. I wasn't able to properly integrate it before the deadline submission. I'll definitely add it when I update the game :)

Interesting take on the theme very deep!Good Work. The game is Fantastic.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for giving my game a try :D

Basically a visual novel but very well written, hence my high scoring. UI is perfectly functional and looks good too, dialogue gives a real sense of what is happening.

I'd love to see this expanded into a full game, as its a similar vein to Not For Broadcast.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your kind rating :3

I've already wishlisted Not For Broadcast! I love games featuring real people (like Contradiction: Spot the Liar and Her Story)

this hits deep, daaamn...

good job!

Thank you! I hope it had a good impact on you :)

Really chilling but fun experience, felt like I was in the game at some points, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing the game :) I'm glad you had a good experience from it

Hee-ho. Interesting game

Developer

I'm glad you found it interesting :D Hoo-hii.

Submitted(+1)

You also did a visual novel. It was interesting, I think it has multiple interpretations for everyone playing.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for giving my game a chance :)

Submitted(+1)

That was a very nice game, very calming and actually makes you think and see through different points of view. My fun was kinda ruined by two things: the inconsistent reactions rom the caller while using the same answers, and the impossibility to get a different ending. I played 5 run, even refreshed my page on the 5th, and I always get the same final message :x

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Wow, thank you for playing it multiple times!

When the game was tested, it initially had one response per caller. However, I got the feedback that the callers are “too nice” and “too accepting” so I had to rewrite the script so there are two possible responses from the caller: one positive and one negative (ish) for each DJ advice. It was the final day before submission so I ended up randomising the answers. The succeeding caller responses were supposed to be based on your previous advice, but my brain wasn’t working anymore so I took the easy way out :P

As for the endings, they would differ if: you skipped all the songs (giving you the Silent endings) and if you contemplated in each song (giving you the Reflective endings). The advice you gave also affects the ending but you have to pick consistent answers. I’m writing more scripts for the endings based on the callers you encounter, too. I wanted to hide lots of Easter eggs for the proper, first version of the game :D

Submitted(+1)

Oooh okay that’s interesting! I didn’t try to either contemplate or skip x) Inlike it’s more focused on our advice than on people’s reactions, I though about that. I must have always missed a few answer while trying to be consistent, but it’s not always obvious to as what it reflects. I don’t know how you count this consistency, but make sure to be forgiving, if we required 100% score for each ending it might be tough! I’m looking forward to play an updated version :)

Developer(+1)

You're right! I'll adjust the ending calculations so it's easier to get the other endings. Thank you so much for your insightful feedback and for wanting to play the updated version :D

Submitted(+1)

Good writing, fitting story, rather a short interactive experience than a game.

Developer

Thank you for giving it a try :)

Yeah, I agree that it’s more of an interactive experience than a game at the moment. I was thinking of adding puzzles during the “contemplate” mode when listening to the songs but thought it would be a lot of work to do in just a week. I’m taking in everyone’s feedback to improve the game after the jam ends.

Submitted(+1)

Interesting take on the theme very deep! Contemplating calmly at the end of the storm (meteor).  Full screen support would been nice, and maybe the end explosion scene. Good job!

Developer

Feedback noted! Thank you! I wonder if I can do a quick fix and write the code for full screen during the game jam?

And yes, the end scene can definitely be improved. It was rushed because it was the final day of submission and I ran into some bugs. Thank you again for taking the time to play the game :)

Submitted(+1)

A very good end of the world therapy sim! The world may have ended, but at least the people were happy and content with life...except one or two.

Developer

Thanks for playing the game! I didn't think of it as a therapy simulator, but now that you mention it, the game can be therapeutic :D

The caller's responses are randomised at the moment, so some of them can be jerks (but some gameplays, they can be accepting)
