How does your game fit the theme?
Catch fish to upgrade your tools until you're ready to catch a deep-sea leviathan!

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
The vast majority of the game is fully from scratch, with the exception of a few sound clips and the base image for the intro/end screen (which I edited).

Hey I liked this one! At first I thought the controls were a little overwhelming because it was a lot of text at once but it became easier after some time. The coding behind this game seems very solid and I especially enjoyed that boss fight. This seems like a lot of work and you pulled it off well, nicely done!

Thank you so much! I completely understand the controls sounding overwhelming from the text dump at the start, that is something I really wish I had more time to work on, but I'm glad once you got in it was smooth. I couldn't believe how much code went into just making the basic fish >.<;;

And yay, I'm glad you liked the boss! I tried to have him loop his cycles so he would try to break off the hook every 15-20 seconds, but it didn't quite work, so I'm glad it was enjoyable anyway ^.^

Nice little game. I would recommend that you simplify the controllers more ..like using the same button when throwing and hooking ..

I liked the fishing part that it had the taste of rhythm games but it's missing the mechanics that won't let you spam and break the gameplay .. but Job well done! :)

Developer(+1)

Yeah, that's reasonable. The reason I separated those inputs was so you could cancel a cast, but it's not a commonly used feature. And I definitely wanted to add components to prevent spamming, but for the arrow keys I didn't have time to implement that, and for the pull gauge it just didn't work the way I wanted it to, so instead of it being a skill check I just made it a pull power multiplier. Thanks for playing!

Fun game! This was very fun to play honestly and I liked the fishing loop. I will say however that it is very easy  to cheese the actual fishing part by just holding down all the arrow keys at one time and then just spamming space. Either way it was very fun and the art was very nice.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you had fun! Yeah, you're totally right about cheesing it, I wanted to have a penalty to hitting the wrong arrow, but didn't get to that, and the space bar was supposed to act like a skill check where you had to hit it at a specific place to get a successful pull, but I couldn't get that to work, so instead I just made the bar a pull strength modifier, but it really doesn't make a huge difference since most of the fish are easy to pull up anyway. Will definitely expand this project and fix all of these things in the future. And I'm glad you liked the art! ^.^

As others have stated, the controls are complex; this can be avoided with simple UI prompts, which are already partially implemented in some capacity. The mixture of ways you are getting the controls across may be the issue and partially the prologue into the large instructions text. I had to reboot a few times because I sometimes quickly glossed over things.

Great job having a functioning gameplay mechanic, loop, and submitted game!

Be proud of this step, and you can do great things!

Developer

I definitely would rather implement UI prompts or small tutorials progressively as you play rather than the awkward text dump early on. It's admittedly a trap I've fallen into before, so I need to be better about it, but it was super last minute and I didn't have time to make a more effectively implemented tutorial scheme. I'm sorry that you had to reboot to reread that, I should have at least had a button to pull up the control sheet during gameplay. Thank you for playing, I really appreciate it and your feedback!

An interesting game, I think it would be nice to add some music

Developer

Do you mean before casting and/or while the hook is sinking? I had a hard time with multiple audio sources overlaying (they were one of the last thing I worked on), and I liked the ambient sound effects. I definitely need to work on the audio triggers though, since sometimes the underwater theme would overwrite the fish musi depending on how quickly you hooked the fish.

It's an alright game, fishes are fun to catch :)

Thanks, I'm glad the fishing was fun. I really wanted to make the boss fight more intense and have a few more mechanics, but the regular fish ended up with WAAAAY more code than I anticipated lol. I'm definitely going to spend a lot more time on this game and hopefully make it an actually good game.

good luck :)

I was a bit confused with the controls at first but when I got familiar with it,catching fishes became very fun !

Developer

Thanks, I'm glad you had fun! ^.^ Sorry about  the controls, I wish I'd had time to come up with a better way to tell people how to do it aside from the text dump at the start...

I really like the concept of fishing, doesn't seems like the white bar do a lot regardless of the point I press space bar, I liked the music a lot. Also the fact that have a story is nice, good job.

Developer

Yeah, originally the white bar was going to be a skill check to see if you had a successful pull, but that didn't work the way I wanted it to, so I changed it to be a multiplier to your pull force. It's not a huge difference, just something to give a bit of variance. I want to get it to work with my original idea in the future. And I'm glad you liked the music, I'll let my composer know :)

Hey decided to give a downloadable game a go since i was only playing browser ones. You have a good take on the submission here and the gameplay seemed to work i didnt really have any problems. THe text was a little blurry at the start not sure if thats just on my end but still readable. well done on the submission i wish you the best since i read u may continue work on it

Developer

I really appreciate you giving it a try, I'm glad you liked it! The text is more blurry than I would have liked, it's not just you, I had an issue with the resolution scaling of the UI when I exported the file. Thank you! :)
