The ant and anthill theme was not something I expected to see from the jam theme and I'm pleasantly surprised to see it here! And a platformer built entirely around a wall climbing mechanic is something that I think definitely has potential.
thank you so much! The idea sounds pretty fun and it was necessary to make the ant walk on the walls, I'm happy you like it!
I feel the moving isn't too smooth. When the ant stands at the edge, the visual will be broken!
Also, (Personally) The move up is really frustrating, I think you can use A or D instead of W and S for climbing. And I dont understand why when I hold W and D then space to jump, the ant just jump very shortly and fall to the spike(?). And adding some save points is also great(or it already has but I havent reached there)!
Aside from that, this game really did well in Ant movement :D, the graphic and sound are completely fit too! But maybe add somethings to do with the leaf, like just holding it and moving to the nest is a big waste to the potential of this game!!!
Yooo thanks for the feedback :)
I also thought about what would be more intuitive for the climbing, if A and D, or W and S, or both (I guess it is a matter of playtesting with a lot of people), I went with the W and S option, so it was easier for me to use A and D for fall out of the walls on purpose without extra coding, a bit of laziness there ๐
About jumping very shortly when holding W and D, I didn't notice you are right, I see now the ant walks slower when holding W and D over holding only D, so when jumping the horizontal length of the jump is less (the jump height seems the same though)
I think it is because I used the new unity input system so (in my unexperienced opinion ๐ ) it seems to be optimized more for a top-down type of movement like when using a joystick, if you hold D the horizontal velocity is 1, but if you hold W and D the horizontal and vertical velocity are around 0.70~, which I think is the reason the ant walk slower when holding 2 buttons (I think that wouldn't happen in a 2D top-down game or a movement in a 3D space
About the save points you are totally right, I'll be working on implementing some checkpoints ๐
We also wanted to do more with the leaf but our inexperience and the time restriction were bigger issues this time ๐
I'm glad you liked the game and found those details, thank you for playing! :D
The music, and visuals are amazing and the idea of climbing as an ant is too, only problem is the hitboxes sometimes dont work and my jump ends up failing. Still great game
Yep the jumping can feel tricky sometimes, I know there were several stuff should have done to make it feel better, thanks for the feedback :D
Cool little game Here firstly the platforming was nice good movement climbing was smooth all felt polished. the art was really nice good little artsyle to the game and use of lighting was nice. music was also good and fit nicely didnt blow my eardrums out and finally the ant and his animation were great. well done guys great submission
Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed all the details :)
This was so well done! The art was incredible and there was a huge quantity of different assets. The lighting looked great and the mechanic was implemented really well. The music was awesome! I really liked the instrument choices and cadence, really felt like marching ants. Incredible that you guys did this quality in a week, let alone while being new to unity. Well done!
So nice you noticed those stuff like the big amount of assets and the music cadence, I'm happy you liked it :D we were figuring out how to do everything on the road, so a lot of googling and iterations to make the things to work decently ๐
Nice! I love being a little ant dude. The climbing mechanic works nicely, and the music and art is well done as well!
I'm glad yout enjoyed it, thanks for playing :)
It's fun to crawl around on the walls, definitely gave me the ant fantasy that I wanted. I couldn't tell where the checkpoints were located and got stuck on a particularly long section. Keep it up!
Thanks for playing! There is no checkpoints ๐ I there should be ofc but I didn't think about them and or how to do them on time ๐
Cool game I enjoyed being the ant and jumping onto the walls, the music was well written and definately gave off a marching ant sort of vibe, the art was great too! well done team :)
Yooo I appreciate the music compliment :D, I'm glad you enjoyed the game, thanks for playing! :)
Music is hard you guys nailed it :)
thank you! :) This jam was a great opportunity to learn and work together, and I think we are a good team!
Nice game! I liked that you could climb on the walls, and the art style was really neat. Also, it seemed that you could take multiple paths to the end, which is really cool.
Thanks :) yeah the idea was to make the map somewhere in between hollow knight Metroidvania vibes and a classic anthill you could have at home, so we wanted to give a bit of labyrinth vibes to it
This was fun! great work executing the idea. I didn't have any trouble figuring out how to play, and it was very straightforward. I only died a few times before making it to the end. Well done!
Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed it and managed to finish it without any trouble! :D
Nice job! the platforming mechanics work very nicely. It is a little hard to figure out how to climb but after a while you get the hang of it!
Thanks :D
it was a bit tricky to make the climbing works ๐
Fun and interesting game. Climbing up walls was hard at first but it was fun to master the mechanic.
With more experience coding and time to polish it, maybe I could been able to make it easier to master from the beginning, gets buggy sometimes ๐
Thanks for playing :)
Wow, super cool game! I find great that you can walk as an ant on the walls. This makes it more unique
It won't be a real ant if you can't walk on walls ๐ง
Thanks for playing! :)
I really love the art style in this one, the music is nice, and also the mechanics are very unique. A cute short platformer with a lovely ant, thank you! Very good work, especially for a week!
Thank you for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
The art is straight up awesome and the main mechanic of the game is extremly cool aswell! Sometimes the player gets stuck while walking, the solution is to use a composite collider with the tilemap collider that would make the game much smoother. Further more you could treat the player bias better by adding features like a coyote time. Still a very cool game you should be proud of!
Hi! glad you like it, and thank you for the suggestion! We were struggling with those collision with the tilemap so we gonna try it out that solution :)
I head the same collision issue in my first ever game jam. The only problem with the solution is, that the collider then uses a Rigidbody, which needs to be static, which could be bad for performance (but i am not really sure if it bad for the performance since it never caused trouble in my games)
Oh I guess it would cause performance troubles in bigger games (or slow computers) and it surely is a good practice to have from the beginning. I'll play around with it to try to understand it, thanks!
thank you! Yeah, we struggled with the tilemap collider a lot, I modified it a little but it still has those little bugs.
One of the more interesting takes on the theme, loved it ! I love the simple, yet satisfying climbing mechanics. That's how ants move in real life isn't it? It felt like "getting over it", with a giant leaf on my back. Well done, thank you for making this !
Really glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing! :D
Really loved the mechanic where you can walk either vertically or horizontally
Thanks, was really weird to think about that walk mechanic due to my lack of experience in unity or coding, what's actually going on are some invisible ladders ๐ช helping the player to go up and down next to the walls
Hey, as someone who likes and keep ants, that was fun to play. Nice art and music :D
Maybe implement some checkpoints? Was a little bit frustrating, when i got far and had to start from the very beginning.
Good progress, for learning unity in one week!
Too I'm glad you liked it! :)
Yeah, checkpoints or something to make the game less frustrating would be a good addition (we didn't figured out how to do so before the deadline ๐)
Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you! we want to add it in the future!
WOW! The art is fantastic! I wouldโve liked the gameplay to have been a bit more than walking around and climbing (for example you could add picking up rocks and leaves and using them to get farther in the level somehow).
We had the same kind of ideas! but due to the time and lack of experience, we went for the minimum to make the game playable ๐
hehe yeah, the nice part of this is that we can keep practicing with this project adding those kind of cool stuffs
