That's some tight platforming man! Nice control over the jump arch and even a little bit of momentum based stuff with the side facing spikes, right? Nice. Maybe I imagined that last part but what I'm saying is, movement feels great and any missteps were my own since the control over your character is pretty much total. Feels good to move.

Smooth, skillful and polished animation, cool bgm loop, sfx are solid. Plus the concept is super cartoony and fun. It mixes platforming and puzzle really well. If you ever start updating this with more levels or something, that'd be sweet. I really enjoyed your game, congrats on the submission.

Developer

Thanks a ton!! Post-jam version is definitely in the cards... more tricks, more levels, more pain! Glad you enjoyed the parts I put a lot of love into.

I like this game, solid controls, nice music, sfx and art.

Congrats!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed so much of it!!

THE GOOD PARTS

  • I like the idea a lot. It really keeps you on your toes, although some levels can be circumvented a bit to have some extra hearts and make it easier for you to reach the flag.

  • The music is surprisingly good. It’s a banger! Seriously!

  • The controls were tight. I have no complaints, they were on par with the skill demand.

  • The animation was [mwah chef’s kiss]. I don’t even know how the dev managed to make them look that smooth but it works, and it’s amazing! Keep it up!

THE BAD PARTS

  • Loop?. I think this might be the only weak spot I see in this entry and it’s PURELY SUBJECTIVE; I don’t think the interpretation of the theme REALLY matches the “LOOP” but since this game already works as its own standalone thing I think it has already transcended this jam.

Being honest, there’s almost nothing I can criticize of this game. I’d say there are some bugs lingering around but those are perfectly attributable to this being a jam entry and maybe not having enough time to playtest everything.

For example, if you hit spikes from below, you’ll get sent to oblivion. Also, the UI doesn’t really “adapt” to my full-screen resolution, which is something that needs to be looked at (if the dev intends to make a full game out of this). I see a lot of potential in this idea so if you’re going to keep working on it, keep me posted! I’ll be happy to test your game as long as I can spend time on it!

CONCLUSION

Play it, you’re going to love it. It’s a platformer with some light puzzle elements embedded, I’m sure the developer has already seen a lot of potential on this entry and I’m positive we’ll be getting more “I NEED PAIN” sooner than later!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so so much for that detailed feedback! Love it! I really appreciate your comments on the music and animations, they were tough to get initially but I’m super happy with how they turned out. I knew my take on the theme was a bit of a stretch - to be clear it was the fact that you are always healing and hurting yourself over and over. But your encouragement means a ton! You can find me on Twitter under the same username, that’s where dev updates will be posted once I get started on a post jam version!

One of the best games i've seen so far ! The gameplay is simple but very addictive, the art is cute, the animations are smooth, the music is cool ... I wish there were more levels actually, because it was so enjoyable !

Great work !

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Aw, that's exactly what I want to read! "MORE PAIN!" hahaha. It is coming my friend, it is COMING!! Thank you very much for playing!

So much fun playing this game!! nice work!. The idea is so great and the art work is so cute!!

Developer

Thank you so much! Was a blast to make as well, I am itching to make more cute death rooms! Haha.

Absolutely excellent game, very cute PC sprite, overall great concept! Sometimes horizontal movement physics varied a bit after hitting wall spikes, but I think after a few tries I got the hang of it. This is certainly a unique and fun to play concept that I'm excited to see expanded upon

Developer

Thanks! I think the first major update/version post-jam will use a momentum-based physics system, so that it takes how fast you hit the spikes into account. Right now everything is shooting you up/sideways at fixed values, so there can be some wonkiness :) I appreciate your feedback and I'm excited to share more!

10/10 would die again ... love the music and the character! died 574 times many deaths due to jumping with out actually pressing x lol and cuz bad gamer but enjoyed the game fully !

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much!! Was a blast watching you play and break stuff, and be sure to let me know if you decide to stream this version!

I reeeeaaally like this game!

I can't describe very well, what I like about it, but the general idea and how the player character bounces off of the spikes is just reeeaally fun to play :D The collisions do feel a little off sometimes, but that wasn't really much of a problem to me.

The music is minimalistic yet super catchy and fun. I love it!

The visuals were very decent. Especially the character animations are super smooth. And the idle animation after waiting for a bit is an awesome little detail~

Developer

Such wonderful praise, thank you very much! More to come for INP and I hope the same for your game!

Submitted(+1)

I'm looking forward to it :)
And yeah, I'll probably add more post-rate-period content when I have time

I loved the idea of losing hearts . it would be better to use up arrow to jump instead of X button, and a web build would be easier. and i couldn't see the theme in it

Developer

Great feedback, up was completely unused outside of the menu so that's a good idea! I have a habit of using Z/X/arrow keys for the platformers I tried making before actually completing one (this game).  I also agree on the web build - it was going to be a web build but I found my collision code didn't function the same way, so it was unplayable! Will be getting a web build up ASAP! My take on the loop theme was, in order to beat the game (or even PLAY the game), you have to do two things: heal yourself, then hurt yourself. It's the same order of operations every time, so you're repeating these steps endlessly until the finish. Hope that helps clarify, and thank you again for your suggestions!

very straight to the point game, I liked the idea of getting hurt to move on.. reminds me of IRL lol

Developer (1 edit)

I NEED PAIN is based on real-world events, so glad you noticed! Just kidding of course, thank you for playing and I'm stoked you enjoyed it.

This game was amazing! The core mechanic was super clever. I also loved the attention to detail in the animations of the character as he runs and jumps. One of my favourite entries so far!

Developer

I appreciate that so much, thank you! Sometimes that small scale art flows out easy, sometimes you spend 8 hours on a 4 frame animation... hahaha

Submitted(+1)

Not usually a precision platformer fan but you're changing my mind! The run cycle for your character is awesome btw. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Oh man, did I just convert you?! This is a historical moment folks. imaCupaJoe likes precision platformers. Well, they at least like I Need Pain. :) thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Loved it, cant wait to see how you expand it

Developer

Thanks Bubbles! You'll definitely know when that happens!!

Submitted(+1)

A very well made game, the handling is precise and is perfect for this type of game. Congratulations, it makes you want to play the future expanded version.

Developer(+1)

<3 that's exactly the reaction I was hoping for! Give me more pain! Hahaha

Submitted(+1)

was a good twist on a simple platformer. the music was cute. I think the art was a little too simplistic for my tastes but was really polished.

Developer

Thanks so much for the feedback, means a lot! It's definitely a simple minimalist approach, someday I'd like to get better at higher detailed pixel art

Submitted(+1)

that was some fun and brutal platforming with a nice polish. The idea alone is really cool, and could be expanded in a lot of ways, like moving spikes, enemies, proyectiles, etc. Chaining up bounces and keeping the momentum just feels good.
I managed to beat it even when my stupid brain made me press R to restart a level but ended restarting the whole thing :P

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the generous praise! Means a ton. I've heard the mistaken keys story a couple times, I think I'll be adding some remappable controls ASAP :)  I have LOTS of ideas to expand this game... I'll be sure to announce!

Submitted(+1)

Interesting how the game forces you to play in way that you're not used to. I really like the character animation too.

Developer

Yes! That was a goal of mine. I wanted to make a cheeky little poke at the traditional platforming trope of "avoid the spikes".

Submitted(+1)

Maybe my personal favourite so far! Just love the animations and how polished moving the character around feels, makes the platforming super interesting. Also like the mix of puzzles and precise platforming.

Great job!

Developer

That means so much!! Thanks a ton. Looking forward to enjoying yours :)

I really hope you will then!

Windows told me that this game may cause harm to my computer; it actually caused harm to my soul.

On a more serious note - the animations are incredibly charming, the level design was super clever and cheeky, and significant damage was done to my soul seeing 'DEAD' appear every few seconds.

10/10.

Developer(+1)

You had me laughing a lot with this, thank you for such kindness and humor! I definitely have the steam I need to make the next version...

So good and so much fun!!  :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you <3 your support really helped push me towards doing this to begin with!
