The audio, graphics and story telling features were very enjoyable and I felt truly immersed in the story throughout the gameplay. If I could give it a higher rating, I would.
I mostly ignored the weather and chose risky options, and everything worked out. I must be the greatest pirate captain in the multiverse :)
I would’ve liked if the click sound effect was changed to something more fitting, since it played so many times. The writing was good though.
The click sound effect is a bit much after an entire journey for sure. I do wish I had got around to that before the end of the jam.
Thanks for the review :D
I had the craziest adventure haha. I really liked the writing and the music was spot on. I did feel really lucky with every encounter I ran into, at some point I was really trying to "lose" to see what would happen but I kept lucking out. Not sure if that was random or if the game leans that way a bit. Still, was pretty fun and engaging!
So glad you enjoyed it, I agree the game could have benefited from rebalancing some of the quests for sure. We thought it better to err on the side of too easy though
Very charming! I like feeling like a pirate’s advisor, that was a neat idea :) The quest texts are engaging and often put a smile on my face.
I got a bit confused by how predicting the weather would actually help me. I know the quests depend on the weather, but correlating the predicted weather with what would happen in a quest was rather hard. I also didn’t quite get how the stones are supposed to be read in practice. So I went the other way and simply clicked on the choice that seemed to make the most sense in the moment. I am pleased to say that me and my ghost crew managed to get the trident in the end!
Note that I first played the game on mute on my phone. I think this is the first game this jam that actually works on a phone, so kudos for that! I then went back to play it on my laptop with sound so I could vote on that. I was surprised to find it way less playful / innocent / merry / “Monkey Island-ish” than what I imagined while first playing.
In the end, the whole thing really felt like a tiny adventure, thanks for that :)
I am glad you enjoyed it, I definitely agree that the impact of the weather on the choices could be telegraphed way more, we did this for the main quests but didn't have time to clarify it as much for the side quests.
10/10 would starve to death again
Interesting game, still a bit confused, how is this relevant to cycles?
All the choices in the game pertain to the weather, and the weather is simulated to follow natural cycles, (Summer, Winter, Storms, etc)
Monkey paws OP, but that bird is useless ! Got the trident !
Nice one =)
Well done, Yeah I think the bird has about 3 useful lines out of all the quests, the rest is on the cutting room floor :P
Very cool theme! Love the art. I think the beep could have been a little more piraty.
This game reminds me of games like Oregon trail. Its fun to play, though I had a feeling it missed a bit of direction or a goal. There's a lot of dialog for a jam game. I found the event that gives max everything (1000 gold, 50 cannons, etc.). That was a trap. The increased food usage killed me within the next 20 days. Is this game open source? I'd love to take a look at how a branching/dialog based game like this is implemented.
It is open source yeah. GitHub ibotha/bevy-jam-5 I apologize in advance for the game-jam quality code
I must say that the dialogue trees are neatly organized. It's interesting to see how you've set that up. Seems like an effective and flexible system. The rest of the code looks good too.
Can you add the github link to the game page? So other people who're interested can find it?
I added the link thanks, I am glad you like the way the code is done, I wanted to make it as easy as possible to write dialogue because I knew I would be doing a lot of it XD
