Fun idea and it's impressive you did it with no engine. Not sure if it's something with my PC but even in fullscreen mode there seemed to be almost no fish, when I did see them they were almost always too big to eat. Also ran into some kind of bug where the kelp at the bottom was really small, not sure if that's related.

Fits the theme super well though and I think if the spawning was changed a little it would be really fun. Also liked the art a lot and the audio was good.

Oh sorry, the kelp looked fine I thought it was a bug because I thought I saw it spawn big once. I guess that may have been the bug.

It's quite polished, however there was an issue with loading the game but other than that, it was amazing!

thanks for the feedback!

very cool game, polished, you probably didnt have enough time to make a tutorial, but only one thing was a bit annoying: sometimse when you start to play a fish is already in you and you die :(

np really enyojed the fast paced good gameplay!

Hi!

Sadly I can't give a detailed review about your game and it's mechanics.

Since for me the fishes mostly did not render. Sometimes I just died without seeing anything. Sounds I heard though. There was also an error message in the console.
Also I could only control the fish in maximized window mode. Which is why I thought at first that it was completely broken.
After about 30 tries to play it somehow I gave up.
But now and then I could play a little bit, which I really liked.

I really liked the game, really good graphics and SFX. The only two problems were there was no tutorial and if you held the mouse further away from the fish it swam faster(not sure if that was intention or not). But overall really good game.

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but the game is empty. The fish is all alone without any other fish. Then he shrinks and I lose. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Yeah there are really no fish

Hey fun game.  Good job!  I liked the music and visuals were solid.

Some points of feedback though.  A screen in-game explaining how to play would be great.  When I first started playing I didn't really know what was happening.  Some instructions could clear that up pretty quickly.  I know it's on the game page but some people won't bother going there

Yea I know how it is, I ran out of time too haha

The visuals are nice, and the audio is also quite good, but while the idea holds up, I think the execution and current balance severely damage the experience.

When starting a level, you can sometimes be right next to a big fish and die immediately, or in a few seconds after moving. The camera is also too zoomed in, making it hard to see fish close to you.

It’s hard to find fish smaller than you. I think an element that adds to this is the fact that other fish can also eat smaller fish. I imagine you were trying to be somewhat realistic here, but games aren’t fun because of being realistic, and in this case, I believe this mechanic harms the experience. When the game begins, all the small fish will be quickly eaten up, leaving none to the player.

Related to the previous issue, success or failure feels like it comes down to the very start of the game, if you find a lot of fish you can eat quickly, you’ve won, otherwise, you’ll starve to death.

Movement speed felt a bit inconsistent, since sometimes I’d move slower than normal while having my mouse in the same position. I believe this is related to the puffer fish, but I’m not sure. If the player can’t realize why their speed is changing, that means that the game needs better signaling, or to straight up get rid of that mechanic.

What fish you can eat is also inconsistent, since sometimes a fish would look bigger than the me, but I could still eat it, while other times it’d seem to be about the same size, but that fish would eat me instead.

The space above the seafloor feels completely useless, since, to my knowledge, no fish spawn there or go there naturally.

Also, while in the main menu, if you click on certain spots of the ‘Play’ button, you’ll instantly click on a level icon and be instantly sent to that level.

Nice art and music. Fits the theme. But it felt like the only times I won it was because I spawned on top of small fish at the beginning. If that didn't happen I just roamed around and found only big fish.

Pretty neat game, the graphics are pretty nice and the music is epic, but like everyone my main problem was the dificulty, it was hard to even understand what was happening the first few tries, but it still is a pretty solid game

I'm glad you liked the music and sfx!

I think this is really well done! Though my non epik gamer self was not able to get past level 1... But yeah! Great job!

The art looks nice, and the music fits very well! I feel like the game lost some enjoyment because there were not really any clear instructions, and the ones on the itch page don't really help too well. I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to eat, so I always end up just starving to death. I think with some clearer instructions this would have been much better, but other than that good job!

Pretty cool-lookin' game, although this made me realize more about the importance of giving atleast a tutorial or instructions in how to play, I couldn't figure out the controls immediately so I didn't enjoy it much. I get startled with the you-lose screen when I die lmao. Overall, good job! - especially that  this is a no-engine game :D

  • Theme: Very well design. I never left the first level. Truly a limited space based on the fact that i couldn'd advance at all.
  • Audio: Music very relaxing. The sound of eating is nice. And the losing music is enjoyable.
  • Visuals: I enjoyed everything, but the sizes are a little missfitting.
  • Gameplay: I apologise, but i only noticed that i'm moving because of the visuals, otherwise the fish is missing some thing of visual to tell that you're moving. The spawn system is awful, because i eat fishes that i couldn't see and sometimes the game last 1-3 seconds because of a big fish that spawn just where i was.

Congratulations on the game.

I think you missed the most important part of the game that is how your system spawn the objects (fish) in the scene. It's one of the most dificult part of a game development. With more trainning you will be able to figure out how to create more creative systems.

Cheers.

In  development there is a process that is called "Peer review", which you called someone to test what you did, because usually, what you developed, you know exactly how it's suppose to behave and you can't see what it could go wrong.

In a few words: it is easy for you, because you know where are the spawns and how they behave. ;)

we did that, we found those issues but it was only a few hours before the jam ended :0

Hello.

What I like:

- The music.

- The SFXs.

Suggestions:

- I once literally started the game dead and multiple times I died in 10 seconds because big fishes spawned right next to me. So, here are what I'd like you to change: make it so that big fishes spawn only when the size of the player is like somewhat big ; make it so that more small fishes spawn at the beggining.

- Have one SFX for fishses that are not the player eating other fish and another SFX for when the player eats a fish.

General suggestions:

- Add screenshake. I just like it.

Question: How does this game fit the theme?

Hello.

2- kinda confusing without it. ( for me at least )

3- when someone eats you and when you die.

Thanks for answering the question and replying.

A cool game to say there was no engine. I will admit, though, it is very difficult. However, it seems the difficulty comes from the lack of small fish to eat, usually me ending up running off alone and then into the mouth of a big fish. More populated waters with smaller fish would definitely fix the difficulty. Overall, cool stuff.

Challenging game and especially impressive how you were able to make a game like that with no engine. Also found the art to be very nice looking. So props to whoever made the art :)
