Well this was certainly a trip. While I think it might have gone a bit overboard for me, I did appreciate how consistently the absurdism was applied, and the 3d and 2d blend together pretty well.

With 666 lives I never really felt like there was ever a reason to not just run straight through the level, shooting whatever I came into contact with. There also wasn't much audio/visual feedback for taking damage, so I never really realized I had lost a life until my character was replaced with a flashing respawn arrow.

Try locking the mouse cursor to the window next time. :)

I'm sorry, I will add that to the post-jam update also. I mostly tested the game with cursor keys and x/c.

This game was silly! Perhaps a little bit too silly, sometimes to the point where I couldn't really tell what was going on.

The platforming felt... floaty. Which is particularly bad for a run-and-gun as it makes dodging shots harder than it should be. I also found myself getting stuck on walls and inside platforms.

There needs to be some kind of hit feedback; the relatively hard to see particle effects for bullet explosions aren't really enough to sell hitting enemies and bosses imo. Some kind of sound-effect or the boss flashing might help.

That all said, there was clearly a lot of effort that went into this silly mess and what was there seemed to function well enough.

I unfortunately encountered a bug on the cat boss where my player kept respawning somewhere off-screen, leading them to repeatedly die.

Thank you for the review. I would like to incorporate some of the feedback I've been getting. The bug you mentioned is known and I will be trying to fix it when the game can be updated again. It unfortunately only happens sometimes which makes the cause harder to pinpoint.

Finally, the hottest mess, as was prophesied. Terrifically silly.

Pros:
  • Plot as a whole feels in-line with the ridiculousness of Alice in Wonderland stuff barring perhaps the cloning. I liked the sad crying turtle character.
  • The mechanics work as expected and the utter lack of mechanical balancing is dealt with through extreme excess of extra lives and an absence of any interruption to the game when you die which is practically necessary
  • Even though I'm not into this brand of humour there were some well written lines scattered around that got me to chuckle, as well as the cue-card subtitle display and seemingly phoneme-based text-to-speech use.
Cons:
  • The last level is quite dark and so you can barely see the boss' model which is a shame, because I was enjoying the visual aspect of the game more than anything else
  • Story mode has so many lives and so it feels so easy its practically trivial, while just looking at the harder modes restrictions made me think "There's no way that's happening". Some middle-ground might be better.
Here & There:

The focus seems to be the experience rather than the plot details or game mechanics and so on that front it feels successful in that it's pretty ridiculous and feels as such. It fits the theme relatively well, but by the same token because of people's perception of Alice in Wonderland you could make a game about anything over-the-top or psychedelic and label it under the same brand. This is where mechanics could be better utilized to express the theme or supplement the execution thereof.

Thank you for your review. I learnt a lot doing this game jam and would schedule my time differently. I would like to work on a patch to figure out the difficulty choices more.

Umm, for some reason whenever I could shoot or walk, I could only see my lives. The rest of the screen was completely black. Is this a bug?

I'm sorry my game isn't working for you. I was only able to check it on two different computers and didn't experience what you described. If you could quickly describe your system/graphics card I can try and look into this.

I'm using an Inspiron 5570, Dell laptop with Windows 10, Intel Core i5-8250U CPU, x64 Processor. Hope this helps.
