I liked the warp mechanic, it's a nice idea. I would definitely switch to particles for the effects, I've got a good PC and it was slowing down wildly whenever I warped. The platforming feels very sluggish and floaty which isn't great for the precision required for some of the jumps. Also an indicator showing where my warp would end up would be really nice and help with the "oops I warped too far" kind of moments. And one shot kill is kinda cheap =P The game is already quite hard, so being able to take a few hits before game over would be a welcome addition.

With polish this game would definitely be quite fun to play, I'd imagine! Good job!

Interesting idea. But you need to polish. The music is suitable, as it seemed to me. Found a cheat (or is it described?) That you can drag the character along the level with the right mouse button.

Good luck in development =)

GODDAMNIT, I PUT THAT IN AS A TEMPORARY DEBUG TOOL AND I FORGOT TO REMOVE IT

And yes, I agree, the game definitely needs a lot of polish.

Nice work on this game! I thought the mechanic was really cool, but a bit hard to figure out exactly - I feel like more of a range indicator on when you can dash and where you can dash too would be really helpful. Also the particle effects slowed down my game a bit on a high end PC, so if you want to keep working on this it might be good to try and optimize it. The movement and jumping also felt a little sluggish, but when using the warp mechanic it felt a lot better.

Great job!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! The dash mechanic is really rough around the edges. I wrote in the tutorial that you can dash when in range of neon signs but I should have better included the tutorial or made a better tutorial in general. I'm definitely gonna improve the particle system sometime in the future because after playtesting I saw that the lag is a serious issue.

It's also pretty much the first real 2d platformer I've ever made, so I haven't really gotten the physics and movement completely down yet.

A little bit of confusion mechanics, but overall a good experience, nice atmosphere, the particle effects sometimes made the game a little slow

Developer

Definitely gonna improve the particle system in the future because it is a serious issue. Otherwise, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Some nice ideas but a bit confusing. I can teleport anywhere anytime? I ended up mostly just teleporting to grab stuff and not walking at all. Took me some time to figure out why sometimes I could dash and others I can't.

There's a bug where sometimes a gem doesn't disappear when collecting it and it starts collecting it forever on a loop!

On second part, the background moves with the player even though the screen is fixed, which makes it look quite weird!

Developer

There is a tutorial but I don't think I explained the mechanics of the teleport well enough. You are sort of meant to rely on the teleport mostly and only walk to get in range of neon lights, but I should have designed the levels better to incorporate that.

The gems were a last minute implementation which is why they don't work that well.

Tbh I'm not really sure what i was thinking when it comes to how the background moves. It is tied to player movement because I wanted it to have a 3D-esque perspective kinda thing, but it didn't look that good and I didn't change it for some reason.

Submitted

Tie the background to the camera's movement instead of the player's.

Some inconsistency in art, but cool game otherwise! Keep growing as a developer and reach new heights! :)

Thank you so much!

I really liked the mechanics in this one. The teleporting didn't quite click at first, but eventually, it felt really cool to warp around. I would have wished the enemies didn't fire as fast, as it would have been fun to use them as a temporary bounce point or something of the sort.

A lot of the mechanics are rough and unpolished and I should have spent more time making the core gameplay loop better. Definitely gonna improve it sometime in the future.
