This is a great design. It’s very fun to fly for an extended period of time and get multiple eyes. Swooping around while maintaining control is especially satisfying. But getting to that point is difficult. At first I had no idea what I was doing, fumbling around. Then I figured out I had to just jump, fly, and steer, and only “CYCLONE” sparingly.

I struggle with fine controls, like most platformers for example, and this game, so I get frustrated quickly. It really pains me to put it down for personal reasons because I do think the controls are reasonable. A more capable player would have a lot of fun here. I did get to the purple level, which is cool; it encourages me to explore the rest of the game’s world.

The graphics and audio are serviceable. The particles do a lot. The focus is the gameplay, which it succeeds at. And that’s something to be proud of.

Really loved this game. The controls are had to master but every time I would make a mistake I felt like it was my own fault and it just made me want to get better at it. Others have mentioned the control difficulty and while maybe there could be some tweaking I felt it really fit, makes it feel like a classic arcade game. Defenders initial reception was that it was difficult to control but fun to master. Really the whole identity of the game.

I can easily see this game being a big thing  it was really loads of fun to play. The music and sound effects are all solid and really improve the experience. I really really hope you continue working on this there's a ton of potential.

(Oh and windows defender thinks this is a virus for some reason)

Thanks so much for the warm feedback! I do plan on working on it more!

I didn't know that about Defender. That is: I didn't know the arcade game "Defender" had that initial reaction. The Windows Defender thing I would have assumed. Windows Defender thinks everything is a virus. Thank you for taking the risk!

I think the concept and gameplay is very well done. I only have a few complaints. I found that the screen is rather zoomed out and hard to see. Trying to find the targets and keep track of the angle of Oofoe I think would be easier if It were slightly more zoomed in. Doesn't have to be much but it felt like I was straining my eyes sometimes.

The learning curve is very steep and it was very difficult at first for a few reasons. When you swap from walking on the floor too flying how the controls work changes depending on the direction of the character, going right while running could make you fly left. I got used to this over time but I'm just talking about learning. I also think the controls were quite odd, in my opinion it would work better with one hand doing left/right, and the other hand doing jumping and breaking. Or putting jump on the Up arrow could work as well. I feel that putting one button on the other hand was slightly confusing and took a bit more learning compared to what I'm used to when it comes to movement (WASD)

The flying and level design felt really good and I enjoyed playing the game after I learned it. I think with a few adjustments to make it easier and faster to learn this could be great.

Thank you for the feedback! Yeah, after thinking about it, I'm not actually sure why Oofoe has to jump at all. He could just launch directly into flight. That would probably clear up a lot of left-right turning into right-left confusion. But it would be a good idea in my next iteration to have more control options. Thank you!

Yeah no problem, Love it so far!

It's a unique mechanic, or at least something I haven't seen before.

My initial impression was that it's very difficult to get a feel for. I played all the way through and felt by the end like I might have a decent grip on it, but I played it all the way through again today and there was very little help from muscle memory. I'm not the fastest, so I may not be the target audience for this (although I did enjoy it quite a bit!) but I found the precision needed for some turns and braking was asking a little too much from me. On a third partial playthrough I mapped brake to a button instead of back and I was able to keep flying for much longer, cracking 100k about halfway through the second room.

I also felt the objectives could be larger visually. When flying around I found it difficult to keep track of where I needed to go next without smashing into a wall. Oofoe, the particles, and the lightning arcs were really well done.

The level design was varied enough to keep things interesting the whole time, and after multiple playthroughs. If you plan to continue there may be an opportunity for a modular procedural level system, ie. cut out each section out of each level, allow their colour to be randomly assigned, and then figure out how to make them bolt together seamlessly. I imagine it would be a separate mode, as it would make speedrunning (I believe you mentioned it was one of the focuses of your game) a lot more RNG based.

As I said, I enjoyed it quite a bit, playing through it 2.5 times. It just requires a lot of precision that I do not have the skill to pull off. There's a ton of potential here, though. Keep up the good work.

Developer

2.5 times? >100k? Thank you for playing it so thoroughly!

Also thank you for the valuable feedback! Ah, if you were playing with a controller then a button for brake is a necessity. I had that trouble with a different game I made. On a keyboard, down IS a button. Definetly something for me to note.

I'm relived to hear the level variety held your interest, I'd meant to put in gimmicks on each level but there just wasn't enough time.

That random cave idea is really cool and has me excited. I think I could pull it off. Could be a great endless challenge mode.

I do plan on working on this further! I think if you're hitting 100k then you DO have the level of skill I'm after. If you watch the footage of me playing, I'm bumping into all sorts of walls. Part of that is probably performance anxiety, but also it's behaviour the game doesn't really punish.

Thanks again!
