The art and graphic design were great overall, I just wished for more story. Although for a game jam this is very impressive.

As they say…always leave them wanting more! ;) I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for playing.

The art was great! Especially the detailed background art, amazing! I loved the cute little map. Super nice voice acting and good storytelling.

Developer

Thanks! Glad you played and liked it. Your submission looks great. Look forward to playing it.

Never thought I'd see a scifi adaptation of The Monkey's Paw (and in game form, no less), but here we are--and it really works! Like many of the comments said, I absolutely felt The Dig vibes with the art style and gameplay. Really amazing work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing it and the comments. The Dig vibes some up a lot and that’s likely a mixture of me being a huge fan of the game as well as people yearning for a good sci fi point and clock again (there are basically not every many especially with an old school art style?). I re-read Monkey’s Paw last year and it stuck with me. I remember seeing various adaptations on tv as a kid and they always stuck with me, so I figured it might be a good backdrop for a game.

MP really is a great story that offers so much to work with. I was wondering how you would manage the climax; I'm happy to say I was very, very nervous (but in the best way possible)! If you ever revisit this game, it would be exciting to see how you might expand upon it. There's definitely a multitude of options.

excellent game  lucas feels lol   point n click games are just fun to play

Submitted(+1)

Great job with the setting and establishing the mood. It felt like maybe you were running out of time by the second half and just pushed through the bulk of the story with little interaction. The voice acting was good enough though that it kept that part interesting enough. It was a fun time.

Developer(+1)

Yeah the game feels like two things. First half is sort of a traditional PnC game and the back half ended up basically being a visual novel. I was sort of stuck as I’d sent the voice lines off so I couldn’t work in a lot of interactivity, even if I’d had time for it. For a ‘real’ game though, I’d totally have had the second half be more dense with things to do and some deeper/puzzel-y dialogue puzzles.

Submitted

That's the struggle when working with voice acting indeed. Turns the jam into a who different sort of beast. I end up doing the whole first week with placeholder art so I can get design and voice lines finalized for voice acting and put art in the second week.

This has been on my list to play for a few days, and I'm so glad I made the time for it today to play it all through; it's really well polished and plays well at first; I got a little stuck but then remembered at the start you mention somethings can appear after a while.  I'll certainly keep my eye out for any updates.

Submitted

I was hoping you submitted this year too, since I loved Stowaway last year. The art is so beautiful and I applauded the decision of turning the last section less puzzly and more like story driven. It was a risky move haha, but it got me totally engaged. Congratulations!

Developer

Thanks for the kind works and glad you liked it. You guys made Last Christmas, right? I remember liking that and I look forward to playing your new game soon. The ending flows well enough, I think, that it’s ok being light. Leave em’ wanting more, right? Plus I was just out of time.

Really awesome! Cute little reinterpretation of the classic 'The Monkeys' Paw' story (the reference of which could maybe me mentioned in the description, though I understand that may give some of the story away). Very  well-designed for a jam entry, I only wish that the gameplay could have been a bit more fleshed out. Great job overall!

Developer(+1)

I think a lot of people don’t know the original story (younger, etc) so I sort of didn’t want to spoil it for those that did. I do credit the author in the credits. I also wish there was more puzzle depth but it’s also a jam game and I was short on time and people are usually short on time to play/rate.

Sorry didn't notice it in the credits (im a bit dumb). You really did an incredible job, I truly enjoyed the game! <3

Another great entry with lovely atmosphere. From a puzzle point of view the second part felt more like an interactive story than an adventure game, but I don't mean it as a critique - that's when the narrative becomes engaging, and not having to stop to think too much was a plus.

Developer

Just played your entry and loved it!

I hear ya on the second part. It was all I could do to learn PQ and execute what I had but early on as I was pulling it together I knew the back half needed some puzzles/things to do and some more hotspots. Just no time. I had to get the script off and by the time I did it was just barely there in skeleton form so I couldn’t add anything, really. Knowing what I know now I’d have added some more interactions in the second part and deepened some things to do in the first part and layered the puzzles a little more (more items and things to do to reach the goal!)

Appreciate the feedback.

The visuals are gorgeous and the voice-over is excellent. I also liked the gameplay. Had a nice Lucas Arts feel to it. If there is ever a 2.0 version with more puzzles (particularly towards the ending), I'll definitely play it. But even as it stands, it's a darn good game. Really impressive for a jam entry that has been developed with a new engine to boot.

Developer

Yes, my only regret is that I wanted 3x the puzzles in there. Pad out the front more and with more options and add a couple in the back half. But I was so busy just executing what was there the last half turned into sort of an interactive visual novel. That was interesting for me to try.

Thanks for playing. Will return the favor on your game soon.

I hope you slept well you've earned it what a great game congrats!

Developer

I’m sleeping now ;) Thanks for playing and glad you liked it. Will return the rating as soon as I can on your game.

The visual and character design work together harmoniously with the audio to produce such an atmospheric experience of Altair 4. Mechanically and  visually perfected, with very useful accessibility options.

While a lot is left up to the player to discover, I personally (and I want to emphasize the 'just me' part here) felt that too much was left to the player. I struggled to figure out how to use the tool bag, then discovered through a video play through that right clicking it would open it, but from my understanding right click was to 'look at' objects. Then I had to continue to right click on it to get additional items.

One last section I was severely stuck at was the end monkey paw wish, thanks to the aforementioned video, I knew I had to use it in the living room. I continuously tried to use it in the bedroom, much to my dismay.

Regardless of the above, the game itself is a true work of art, audio, and narrative design coming together to produce an atmospheric, emotional, and semi-engaging experience. Congratulations to you and your team on this game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and mostly fair comments. Some things (like the bag) I left in knowing it would trip some people up. I guess I’m leaning on older PnC games where it was common to right click on everything just to see what it was. Especially a container. But I understand the issue and sorry you got bitten by it. I’d smooth it out or alter it for a commercial/non-jam release. Just not enough (well, no) time to playtest or see others playtest during the jam.

On the pw, yes to that one too. Voice had gone out so I didn’t really want to put in extra lines that were non voiced. I suppose I could have added “No reason to carry it right now” or something. Well noted.

The voice acting really does take it to a whole new level. The backgrounds are incredible and the bird's eye map is hugely nostalgic. Absolutely amazing how much work went into this, I hope you got some sleep this weekend :D

Developer

I slept and patched a couple times ;)

I’m glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the kind words. I’m working through playing the games of people that comment/rate here, so it’ll be a few days but I’m rating and playing!

(1 edit)

I enjoyed it a lot! Amazing how quickly you established such a great atmosphere! ✨

I would really like to see a longer story set in this world! 🙂

Thank you very much for your effort! 💜

(Tiny bug report for version 1.3: when I switch to "subtitles only", all text only appears for a fraction of a second.)

Developer(+1)

I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for the bug report. May be engine related (Checking). I noticed that if you set Subtitles Only and exit and start again they are fine. But soon as you switch them from Speech+Subtitles to Subtitles only the bug occurs.

Awesome work, I loved it, really polished and the style is amazing, reminds me of a game that i made couple years ago with the same controls and style but it was about a serial killer following the player, and now you gave me the energy to actually go back and finish it.
best of luck

Great graphics and sound/voice part - I really like the superb sci-fi setting - a bit less the paw-forward part (already knowing it - and having more or less no interactions).

Anyway - the overall feeling is quite high - congratulations :-)

Developer(+1)

Thanks Marco. I’d have added more interactions but it was a new engine to learn and I was just pushing to get it done to a level I was happy with. I’d love a 2.0 version with 2x the puzzles up front and some form of dialogue puzzles and some items in the back half. But I’m ok with it also being a visual novel. It works well for people that don’t know the story?!

Look forward to playing your game soon.

Submitted(+1)

Yes it works *quite* well the same :-)  and I'll be surely happy to play it again when you'll do an expanded version. As I said - the overall feeling was great - starting from backgrounds but also for the TZone-like dialogues as prologue and epilogue

Fantastic game!

THAT was amazing. WOW.

The art and voice acting are great. Such an awesome vibe. Wasn't able to leave the bluff for some reason (might've been my fault). Either way great job with the aesthetic of it all!

Developer

There was an issue with one update where I broke something in v1.1. Could lead to clicking on something and the game just stopping. Not clear how you were stuck on the Bluff. You should always be able to click the exit and walk back left to the Overlook. In any case the current v1.2 seems solid if you give it a try. If you’re stuck on a puzzle let me know :) you can save by quitting or hitting F5.

Thanks for trying it in any case.

Whoops it was my fault! The resolution defaulted to a bit bigger than my screen, so the exit was just off screen. Excited to finish it off!

Developer

That’s interesting. What’s your default resolution on the system you’re playing on?
