Epic as always! I'll have to repeat what I said about previous entries: the game's very rich in content for a jam game, but it feels even bigger than it is thanks to clever rationing of lore, a very eventful story and, this time around, character switching. It just does *everything* well - graphics, writing, characters, plot, puzzles. Once again, I'm coming away from it feeling like I'm in my early teens and I've just spent a cozy evening reading a really cool thick fantasy novel. That's what I want from an adventure!
Thanks Honza, that's really what I'm going for :) Those novels tend to expand in scope the further you get in, so its been tricky trying to keep that vibe while still fitting an instalment into a jam sized game. I probably need more smaller chapters but don't want to have to keep waiting for the next jam and then to only do a tiny section!
I thought I'd see your game much higher in the rankings, but I suppose it's just a demo, I really want to see more of the world it was one of my top games this time around even though it was just an intro!
Another really well made adventure game. Beautiful graphics and some smart puzzle ideas. Starting out in your own grave is probably one of my favourite Adventure game beginnings, it's so full of intrigue!
What can I say that hasn't already been said in other comments? The look and feel is very authentic to early 1990's adventures.
So, this one is ongoing gig, I see. I remember some of old games like this. It's great, actually, cool pixel art and colors, and the character of sounds. I think, I'd check on the other parts of this story.
Excellent game, the style of the design has a feeling of 90's FC game, the game experience also left a deep impression on me,great job:)
Oh my... you nailed it, again. I'm speechless, great game!
Great game! Gave me Monkey island vibes. I've always wondered how would I react, if I would woke up in the grave. And "I need a drink" sums it up pretty nicely. It's amazing how polished game you made in the short jam-time we had. Excellent work!
Uniformly beautiful pixel art as usual. I was so invested in Book Two and couldn't wait to see where this one picked up. This one definitely felt like it will be a low point in the action for the overarching narrative, but the puzzles were very engaging and I'm still pretty excited to see what happens next. I definitely preferred the first two sequences to the third, but the last does its job setting us up for the next chapter. Good stuff!
Another great entry in the series. Took me a long time to find the rope because my eyes aren't what they used to be, but your art really takes me back to classic Sierra/Lucas games (in a good way). Can't wait to see what happens next!
Thanks! It's not just you, I need to update that in particular after the jam to make it clearer ;)
To be fair I wasted some time trying to get the rope the lantern was hung by in the camp
The Telwynium series is starting to become a real favourite of mine. Having now played the third part, I can't wait for it receive the after jam treatment of being extended.
I look forward to more installments in the future. This is the winner for me.
Another superb installment - and (contrary to Vance) I really loved the changing in POV during the game (it's how I expect things in books). As always I *love* your graphics skill - characters, animation and backgrounds are *perfect* - I really wish to be able to get near such quality.
(I've talked about technical stuff, but yup - you're writing is impressive too)
I'm literally clapping hands - congrats
Dave, this game was great as always. I loved the three different character viewpoint and setting change. I’ve really come to like these characters after 3 jam games. I want voice acting in a full release some day!
Enjoyed the puzzles in all the sections (maybe Pendar’s the most). Thought the Bandit camp was perhaps a tad dark and yet also busy so it was harder to make out objects there, vs Pendar’s or Tani’s section. Not a negative just an observation.
I came in around 53 minutes in playtime!
Telwynium is a wonderful universe and world to explore. I know you’re busy on Drifter but I hope you get time to do a full next level boost on Telwynium at some point. I think it could be a modern day King’s Quest for a new generation and a bunch of older folks.
A fantastic game with great lore, fun characters and well designed puzzles. I've been following this series and the quality of the games is just superb. I especially liked that we got to experience the POVs of different characters just like in a fantasy novel. Also appreciate the nods to Wheel of Time through the characters names (and Cosmere too? Alethi/variation of Kaladin/Breath?). Very well done! Looking forward to the next in the series.
Thanks! Yeah I felt like multiple POVs was a natural progression for the fantasy theme. Though I don't want it to become as sprawling as WoT! The Breath stuff came out of liking the way Robert Jordan and particularly Brandon Sanderson come up with a "magic system" that's based on core rules, it seemed like something that'd translate well to a game. I need to read more of Brandons books. I read mistborn like 10 years ago but actually never read more until last week when I read Tress of the Emerald Sea. But his writing podcast is amazing to listen to.
Let me know any recommendations, hard to know what to pick up next, but I'm in the mood for more fantasy atm!
Well, Warbreaker is a good standalone novel that has a magic system involving breath and color. The Emperor's Soul is also a very well written short story that won him a Hugo. But if you're looking for a series then I can't recommend Stormlight Archive enough, it's his best work yet. It's still not finished (with 4 books out and the 5th one coming next year) but of all the fantasy authors, I'm least worried about Sanderson finishing his book series.
Thanks! yeah, know what you mean about that worry ;) And he's got an amazing work ethic, despite seeming to have a lot on his plate!
Wow, that was incredible. The plot is excellent, I love the epic story you've created. I really want to know what will happen next.
I really like the graphics, the music and the general atmosphere too.
Overall, a very impressive entry. Can't wait for the part 2 of the part 3 :D
The plot thickens. Like the previous instalments, it feels like there's a lot of lore that we're getting a glimpse into. Love me some EGA style graphics.
Did run into an issue where the screen went and stayed black after trying to use the sword on the rubble in the cave, though it was fixed by saving and reloading.
I hope to see the story continue!
Hmm, when did you download it? Thought I fixed that bug yesterday...
Ah, I did indeed have an earlier version. Glad it's been fixed :)
You do capture how good games can be when all the hotspots aren't labeled and you actually have to explore the environment. The puzzles were interesting and a nice level of challenging without being too frustrating. I would have preferred sticking with one character's story. To me, the skipping around between characters and stories made me less emotionally invested in any of them.
Yeah 100%. Bit of an experiment doing a "middle" part of a story for a game jam. Resolving previous stuff and set up for future stuff without the payoff haha. I realise now that the next part planned is actually perfect scope for a standalone jam game, following one character with a standalone story arc... Ah well! Side effect of trying to do a big story in little jams, but always learning!
I would've never have been able to beat this game without a walkthrough and it's sometimes hard to tell what anything is, but I can't beat any DOS adventure game without a walkthrough and it looks like a high budget DOS game, so I guess you did really well in that sense. I'll give it a high review anyway.
Yeah, I'm really leaning into the nostalgia for this series which means you really need to use the Look command on everything like in those old games 😅
Really nice as usual, Dave. I think I hit the same bug as Nick mentioned below, but managed to get past it by doing things in a different order. Part 1 was especially enjoyable with all that sneaking, and the artwork is looking really polished. Looking forward to the rest of Book 3!
Really impressively slick. Love the art style, animations, sound, music, story. Overall excellent package. Since you went to the trouble of adding a nice 'previously on' sequence, I think more one thing you might want to look into is explaining the sword's magic power mechanic a bit more for players who didn't play the previous games. I had a lot of trouble realizing what I was supposed to do with the sword. I also seemed to get stuck, so that the sword could only collect two elements in the cave and I wasn't able to progress. (Though maybe that's just me being dumb haha)
I actually livestreamed my playthrough, so you can see for yourself if it's a bug or if I just missed something. There's a timestamp for your game in the video description. Hope the video can be useful!
Powerhoof is my favourite developer in the adventure game genre these days. Which is saying a lot.
