Really nice idea, and a bunch of potential with a few issues (things missing rather than broken, so I assume just the kind of things that would be added with more development time). As other people have mentioned, it would be cool to see the actions affect the city and to get more feedback on what's happening - I would picture a more zoomed out view with things like swapping park geo to match the action, etc.
Gameplay wise, it needs some variety besides balancing daily +/-. I know it's aimed at all-comers, including kids, but once you got the daily cash inflow positive the rest took care of itself. It needs either a more complex interaction of the numbers or some added randomness. It was also hard to contextualise the numbers with the theme, so it kind of lost meaning. You could almost make it turn based (1 day = 1 turn) and present some simple graphs as news reports or something to show the daily change from the decisions.
Anyhow, that kind of feedback is more indicative that it's an idea worth exploring than anything else. Nice work
This is great, thanks. I do agree with almost everything you said.
I particularly like the idea of turn based. Initially I was going to reply no to that one point, my reasoning was that the idea of it being “continuous time” was to put pressure on the discussions about what actions to create in the game (e.g. government aid). But after trying to justify that in my comment I realized that it would actually better to slow it down to allow more thorough discussion. Thank you for making me think through it a little more.
There are actually many more variables than appear in this very small game and most are not obvious without better hints. It was only when watching IrishJohnGaming (check his twitch stream) playing the game I realized I’d missed the UI part to show the description of each upgrade. Doh!
So you have things like population density will impact the rate of infection. So taking actions that bring people in might give you more money but will also increase the rate of infection, unless you also encourage people to move out to the suburbs. This would be more obvious with more help text (again, doh!) and some graphical feedback as to what is happening in the town. Which is also in your feedback.
Thanks for taking the time to play, rate and most importantly give feedback.
I like the concept. If polished, it could be very cool.I did not notice any scene changes based on my decisions, that would be cool.
I agree. With a little time it could be quite cool. Of course I did intend the scene to change, but well… time. You can buy more ambulances - the roads fill up a bit. That’s all though.
I’d also like there to be life in the town too, people wandering around, a badger in the park, traffic (I wonder if any publishers have a decent traffic system - oh wait, the one from Turn The Game On looks pretty good :-)
Thanks for the feedback.
The idea was great. I think it fits the theme perfectly. it is kind of hard to figure out but it is still interesting. I went bankrupt too many times. (too much like my real life )
Truth is the only way I have managed to succeed is to be rather generous with bail out actions. e.g. “Government Bailout”. I did toy with the idea of giving that as a starting action…
Thanks for the feedback.
Nice voice-over to start the game and looks good but this is not the type of game I normally play. As such, I soon became bankrupt but I enjoyed the concept, music and layout.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I was unsure about a game like this for a “pick it up in 30 seconds” goal. But it helped me talk to my kids about what we need to do to help the world get through this (they helped design the game).
Our other idea was much more action oriented. Will likely build that in the next MessyGameJam.
