There are 52 cards in a standard deck, excluding the jokers, and there are 52 weeks (+ a day) in a standard year.

52 weeks, 52 cards, 52 games is a jam series about making a game every week for a year, based on a randomly drawn playing card!

Each week, I will be shuffling and drawing a card from a deck of cards, and opening a sub-jam for that week's card. Over those 7 days, participants (me included) will create a TTRPG, micro board game, TTRPG accessory, or another exercise in game design. Ideally, the games will each fit legibly on a standard-size playing card, and at the end of the year, they could be assembled into cards and ordered through a printing service! This is not a formal rule, merely a suggestion.

The 52/52/52 jam's rules are :

  • Participate in as many weeks as desired - join late, stop early, take breaks!
  • Submit projects for a given week within that week - if they began before the start of that week, mention so in the submission/description
  • Don't use AI - this jam is about practicing your craft through quantity of output, not speedrunning a final product (if you insist upon using it, label it as such)
  • Absolutely no bigotry, racism, transphobia, ableism, etc (games that deal with this subject matter are permitted, but label them accordingly and do it in good faith)
  • New submissions only (redesigns, reworks, re-arts count! If you worked on it within the timeframe, it counts!)
  • Be kind to one another!

The 52/52/52 jam's guidelines are :

  • Theme your submission around the card of the week! In any way that makes sense to you.
  • Submit projects whether they're done or not - the important thing is working on it
  • If including random elements, you are encouraged to use a deck of cards as your randomizer
  • Try to distill the rules to an amount of text that could fit on a playing card
  • Make games you want to make! Practice what you want to practice
  • Feel free to laser-focus on your strong suit - if you're a designer, feel free to do basic or no art. If you're an artist, don't worry too much about mechanical balance.
  • Have fun!!!!

Overall, don't worry too much about fitting the 'tone' of the jam - the purpose is to work on many, small projects. While the intention of the jam is to design TTRPG or other game elements or systems, the submission is also open to art, music, and any other manner of project!

I, myself, will be doing my best to participate in the jam throughout the year - that is the priority for me, and the jam is made public to create mutual accountability.
