After the fantastic success of the Floating Islands on a Distant Planet jam, (seriously, go check out all those amazing games!), I think doing a game jam after each season of Quinns Quest Play to Find Out is going to be a tradition!

This jam is inspired by season 2, where Quinns, Emily, and Rob play TOON!

This jam is also inspired by a conversation on the Quinns Quest Discord server that went something like this:

A dungeon is a playground!

What kind of a playground is fun for a cartoon to play in?

The design challenge here is to think about how a dungeon or adventure site (I'm just going to say "dungeon" from now on) can support players engaging with it using cartoon logic. Cartoons love rules and they love breaking rules. Cartoon characters seem like they might break the logic that holds together a typical dungeon, yet at the same time, the dungeon in PTFO Season 2 supported the cartoon shenanigans (mostly) very effectively! How does one thread this needle? Let's design to find out!

Here's the Jam!

  • Write a 1-page dungeon or adventure site inspired by TOON and/or Play to Find Out Season 2.
  • The dungeon can be system-agnostic or designed for a specific TTRPG (such as TOON!).
  • The dungeon, and all keying, description, tables, etc. must fit on a single page that the GM can have in front of them (they certainly won't have time to be flipping back and forth in a multi-page adventure while trying to keep up with the cartoon shenanigans of their players!)
    • The page can be any size.
    • You may include a second copy of the map with the keying/labels removed as a player facing map.
    • You may include cover page/credits/etc. on the back side of the page (for a tri-fold brochure or 4-page zine style document), but all content required for play must be on a single side of the page.
  • The definition of "dungeon" is meant to be applied broadly.
  • You are permitted to break any of the above rules if doing so is funny, silly, playful, zany, droll, ribald, wacky, hysterical, or otherwise cartoonish.
  • No generative AI content.

Tips

  • A dungeon can be anything, but it is useful to think about it as a location-based environment where the play foregrounds spatial exploration. Think playgrounds and toy boxes more than narratives and climaxes.
  • Check out the submissions to Idle Cartulary's Zungeon Jam for inspiration (and consider submitting your TOONgeon to that jam as well!)
  • If you want to go way too deep on this, check out Josh McCrowell's Designing Dungeons Course
  • Try writing your game in one sitting in pen. Seriously. It's kind of magic.
  • Have fun!

This is an unofficial jam, not affiliated with Quinns Quest, and my lawyer wants to make sure that I tell you that not only am I a lawyer, I am in fact your lawyer.
