Wily Witch Games rated Kingdoms Abound

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Android.

Kingdoms Abound was absolutely terrific fun. Think Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator but it's cities and a table top game! In Part 1, you roll on a bunch of tables to answer questions about your city state. The results of which are hilarious. Your once tribal tundra city now has prosthetics and modern day soldiers. In Part 2, your cities fight.

I ended up with the above tundra city state named Viseluk who activated a time portal while ice fishing that brought modern day soldiers. Their knowledge of technology led us to invent prosthetics and servant robots. We can shoot light from our hands too, but have a teeny bit of a poverty problem.

What I Liked

  • I loved the tables. There are enough to cover most elements of society without being too many. The results that you get can be varied and very funny.
  • You could easily tweak the tables or otherwise interpret the results if you wanted more of a serious tone which might be better for worldbuilding.
  • Really flexible mechanics for the Part 2 city fights that allow you to play for as long as you like.

Ideas

  • We loved the game and our cities so much we home-brewed the war part. In turns, one of us chose a category (technology, location, magic) to employ in the conflict. They then narrated how they did so according to their results earlier. The other player narrated what they did or how they defended according to the same category. Then we rolled dice within that category against one another. The victor got to narrate the outcome. At the end, we totalled how many victories we got in each category. It worked like a play by play of the war and was really fun and immersive! I gasped, shouted and hollered when my precious Viseluk won or lost.
  • The layout and design of the rules could be improved but it wasn't a big deal. We're here for the protein after all.

Thanks very much for writing the game! We're definitely going to play it again.
