Problem:
As we began to hold more play test sessions, I began to notice a pattern of people not knowing where to go at various places in Level 3. Especially when trying to find out how to get to the initial freezer room. This issue became more prominent as I added more assets in place as the un-obstructed view of the mousehole became harder to see. With this in mind, I decided I needed to add in a few more breadcrumbs for the player to get a better idea of the intended path.
Solution:
To start with, I added mantle decals made by fellow developer Vrij Patel onto various mantleable objects in the level such as the tables and the cardboard boxes. After that, I began repurposing the mantle decal. I added functionality to change the color of the decal to distinguish it from the mantle version.
This can be seen in the material Blueprint below,
With this finished, I began adding in decals in various areas around the level. I put a few of the decals towards the mouse hole, leading to the vents, and leading to the side path. With the added decals in place, I felt the path forward in the level became a lot clearer.
