SECOND EDITION: New features and changes
2E
The goal of the second edition was to simplify some aspects of the game to better match the "Forged in the Dark" ethos.
There are too many changes to list them all, so here are the main ones.
- New character sheet!
- Only dice. Attribute scores have disappeared in favor of dice only. It's easier and less confusing.
- The attributes have been redefined, and some renamed to better match what they do.
- The magic system has been completely overhauled, greatly simplified and is now essentially free-form, with a rule for determining the power of spells on 3 levels. This leaves a lot of room for homebrew and creative thinking.
- The 8 backgrounds have been unified into 4, each with more abilities to customize them.
- Many abilities have been modified or added and character creation has been revised.
- The rules of leveling and xp have been completely changed. The normal game is now played on ten levels, each one bringing a significant change for the character. An epic game rule offers a way to play up to level 20 for those who want to.
- Fatigue has been replaced by Exhaustion and players now have 8 stress slots instead of 7.
- The demarcation between the different ways to Gather information has been clarified (no more confusion between two attributes).
- The loadout rules have been slightly simplified, especially on the character sheet (no more separate bag management)
- The day phase is now divided into 4 watches instead of 6 for more simplicity.
- Camp actions are no longer dependent on the number of rations consumed.
- The Payoff and the random treasure table have been adjusted.
- Minor wording changes for clarity in a lot of places.
