Hey, i'm dustblue. Welcome to our first devlog.

In the first week of our project, we focused primarily on research. Since we already had an idea for the setting and general vibe (victorian Britain, America, steampunk), we spent much time researching this topic. At least Jona and I (dustblue) did that. Vik (Sündenbock) was and still is very busy working out the RPG System. It still has a long way to go. We plan to begin playtesting in two weeks.

Turns out that the available information on life in the victorian age is vast. We spend countless hours watching documentaries and reading articles. And this age was a lot grimmer (just like me lol) than expected, spawning a lot of (darker) ideas in our minds on how unethical everything can get if such a powerful energy source is available. A very grimdark fantasy body-horror adventure is not our goal, but it could prove to be a fascinating facette of a larger world.

Yesterday, I had the chance to do some concepts for the mutations sprinkled throughout the fictional world that, for now, has the working title “Molochit”.

First, I researched some real-life mutations that may occur in animals and humans. While these are (mostly) lethal, in the world of Molochit however, those unusual mutations prove adventitious to the afflicted animals (and humans) and pose them as scarce apex predators.

Those mutations are fueled by the so-called molochit (Jona did some first illustration of those organic stones). These stones grow inside an animal and cause the mutation, giving them tremendous strength, stamina, and intelligence. Removed from the animal (which kills the animal), it retains its power, which then can be used to fuel prototype machines for our society at the brink of a widespread industrial revolution.

As you may guess, this is the foundation for a lot of conflicts. Between human and fauna, human and magic, and human and human in general, since some people condone the ruthless hunting and killing of animals blessed with the mythical Molochit.

Despite the moral implications, using Molochit has another, very physical consequence, that will slowly suffocate the continent, if left unchecked. From every discarded empty Molochit grows a thorny and uncontrollable vine, that crushes other plants beneath and renders land inhabitable.
