A selection of itch.io games with small amounts analysis
Lovely little experience cute visuals
randomised speech
small environment
goes for a feeling more than gameplay
portrays a warm, friendly environment inside from the cold and does a good job
WHY - portray a feeling, environment in a succinct way
very weird
unsettling
very experimental
WHY - Unsettle player, something weird, experimental
short 4-5 mins
Fantastic
great use of mechanics (or lack of) and overbearing music to enforce the role as an observer to this escalation of tensions
WHY - political? player agency take away? Humour?
very short
weird
unsettling horror
told very well - a way with words
backgrounds look great
WHY - unsettling, unease short horror
Great use of text and mechanics to make the player feel uneasy but then a great turn around to optimism and lovely sentiment
short - 2-3 mins
kind of usurping expectations
plays with emotions
like many other micro games feels innately personal in a good way
micro game
another life thing gamified
takes dodgy controls and marries it with awkward situations and speech
2 players
fun, light hearted
i guess pokes fun at the idea of 'no homo'
part puzzle game with box packing part nostalgia trip a la gone home
cool music
the active panel at the side with the images and controls available was very helpful
the credits as you go down stairs cool
another normal thing gamified
playful atmosphere - writing, logo, cerdits etc
Another visual novely dating game
nice use of spacing out discussions and giving player the clicker game to pass the time between the coffee guy visits
i presume gives quite some choice over outcome?
Also i guess falls under the queer games category i think though doesnt make any point of stating it - its just there no extra pomp and circumstance which is nice
maybe short?
interesting premise
adorable/awkward
balancing spicy, drunk and talking
i guess it would fall under dating sim but its a (hot) take lol
games that are made branching from everyday occurrences mixed in with some weird stuff can be really interesting
Weird
open to interpretation
horror but like weirdness more than anything
cool music
movement too slow?
subvert expectations?
driving round yeeting packages into houses
simple concept
fun execution
points add to replay factor
certain skill element
nice little thing
legacy
I get that the gamification and lack of feeling is the message but the lack of tact (possibly intentionally) left a sour taste - which, I guess the impersonal, indiscriminate nature of drone strikes lends itself to
Fleeting experience
The wording really gives you another perspective
its not like it asks you whether you're queer at the start - its a queer game, its not trying to please everyone but tell a specific kind of story
I like that the timer changes the screen when it runs out so the text you're halfway through disappears when the world does
Limiting it to 10 seconds makes it very replayable - if it was a few minutes long it would be much less so
the timer also turns it into a keep trying the same things till you get to the end quick enough to read it and gamifies it like that
