FVNs we read

a collection by Team Eclipse · last updated 2024-11-30 16:31:35

These are all the VNs we've read as a group, but I'm the only one, Keyko, who writes and organizes these posts and reviews. Older VNs have shorter descriptions cuz I forgor, but I did have fun.

It was okay for me. I keep an open mind because it's a jam entry, you guys had one month to work on this, poor Kinu pulling the impossible. The CGs are good. Short and tragic.

I get what the author was going for, but I would've loved to see more of Tomio (Maybe the day before? Seeing his POV?), that way you actually get attached to the character. We weren't as hooked. And I don't make it a fault. It's not a long project.

Feel free to read it yourself, it's a 30 minutes game!

What it feels like is a hidden gem, extremely underrated, and more people MUST see it, read, and cry. I’ll split my review into spoiler-free, what you should work on, and then I’ll start rambling about my feelings with spoilers.

WIFL is a VN that might not have a good first impression, but if you give it a chance, oh boy, you will be rewarded immensely. Like… the art isn’t its strong suit, you kinda need to adjust your eyes a little bit, especially the beginning. Jakob could really use some polishing, but that’s okay. The deeper you go, the better it gets. Some drawings are really cute, others awkward, but I think this VN isn’t about art. It’s about writing. If you like romance and drama, this is a good package deal. If you have a heart, this will make you tear up, even a little bit.

Besides— I think this is a solo developer? You’ve done an incredible job. Not everyone can do this much alone, me included. I can only write. But you’ve covered all the bases yourself? That’s insane. You’re creative and talented. Don’t stop. You can do much MUCH better. You just need someone else to pair up with you, and you’re going to shine. I was a bit proud myself, going through the VN with my friends, and seeing them falling in love with your product. THAT’S MY BOY. WE WORK TOGETHER! I KNOW THAT MAN! Felt like a father watching his child grow.

And that’s it. If you don’t want spoilers and you want to know if this is worth reading, the answer is yes. This VN blows out of the water all the others I’ve read. This is a Top 5 moment. It could’ve been higher if Konpeito had more budget. Now, for the improvement area, careful about walls of text, they're barely above the buttons sometimes.

There is a lot of unnecessary explanation that is on the nose (Mylo ranting isn't always good if it's repeated information or it's obvious) and you tend to go for exposition dump (when introducing places or pre-existing relationships.)

Stella is a bit TOO on the nose? But since she's not a main character, I'm going to look the other way. These are tiny issues, but it's important that you're aware, so next time it's better.

Now let's talk spoilers. I want to discuss how I really liked Mylo's character and his growth. Starting as someone who can't stand for himself, completely and utterly subjugated by Jakob to take the first steps and fail to finally claim his freedom. I loved this process.

But my favorite scene is Mylo doing his first concert with Bax at Arnie's. The way he speaks, acts, and behaves was a reality shattering moment to me.

I don't know why or how, maybe because I could feel the same feeling, but Mylo broke the fourth wall and made me see you, the author, writing this, being proud, determined, excited, happy as you manifested your feelings through Mylo. It was really sweet and lit up a fire in me.

Now, let's talk about something that I disliked. I mean… disliked is a big word for this. It didn't feel right, I guess? So… This entire VN is kinda centered about drama, so things are always going wrong, but compared to other stories I've read, the writing makes sense. It goes bad for the right reasons, and I'm okay with that.

It was a bit meh for me seeing Mylo breaking up with Baxter because, well, they both know and made the same mistakes. Is it really right for this to escalate the way it did? Especially because Bax just… gives up. He doesn't even try to make Mylo understand. It felt so weird that he left. I would've liked to see him try again and win Mylo back? That would've been much better to me, at least. But instead, we got that scene. What happens later saves it, especially the way you ended it with Mylo breaking up with Jakob permanently and the voicenote.

So… overall, I still really liked it. I just wished you could've found a different way to portray this? Cause with all the character development these two go through, seeing Bax just vanish like that didn't feel right to me. That's it. I can't wait for the ending. I'm so looking forward to the happy ever after.

Oh yeah, I always forget. Consider changing the screenshot on your VN page to something more appealing? You DO have good drawings, LET PEOPLE SEE THEM!

Glory Hounds is a superhero style FVN based on comic books and it perfectly sticks to it. I've never been a fan of superheroes, but I was down to try it out with my friends and the hero speech does make me cringe a little, but there's nothing wrong with the novel, it's like, you know exactly what you're gonna get and it works just fine.

The story is basically a comedy with a few twists here and there. Let's see how gay we can make this without a penis showing in view, many times I've giggled, the delivery works well, the main character is your usual boyfailure and you love him for it.

The sprite work is absolutely the star of the show, poses I've never seen before, they have talking animation, everything's so fancy and shiny. I love that they tried making characters out of species you never see and, even if it feels a little wonky at times, it still works because this FVN doesn't take itself seriously and uses its own goofiness to push boundaries, so good job to you devs!

Two minor things would be ---- dont use white screen, PLEASE, Issue 1 had a whopping 10 of those. I wanted to die. This issue slowly fades as you make it through Issue 2 and 3, so I hope this trend dies. Blackscreen work just as well and you won't give me a headache.

Secondary smaller problem on Issue 3 - Khameou speech drags, gets a lil zzz, the weakest point of the novel, but tolerable cause everything else is so great.

100% Recommended. Good story so far.

Before you guys read my review---- play the game. I want you to play the game. Do NOT use my review as a tool to turn your back on it. People worked hard on it, they really did, and I need you to give this game a chance regardless of what I think because, maybe, at the end of the day, it might be a me problem only I felt, maybe you'd like this story. Also minor game spoilers, careful.

Light My Way is a... horror story? I was a bit surprised when the game told me that. I didn't feel that at all. Like... yeah. I get where they're coming from but it's not horror to me. This game feels like a tragedy because everything always goes wrong someway or another. You're never allowed to enjoy yourself too long because the story will make you pay for that and... not in a good way.

Alright, so... this VN has a lot of issues and 99% of them stem from the writing. My biggest advice to you creators, if you guys are reading this, is to slow down. You guys are rushing through the story, not giving anyone a chance to breathe, develop, to understand what is going on. Down time is a good tool, I promise it is, you guys did a couple of really good scenes with the trio. The pool scene. Fabian and Lucian talking through the door. Those are REALLY good, but then... well, it stops working.

Please dont make Lucian give commentary in the middle of narration, make it more informal if you have to, it gets really in the way sometimes. Make sure to split the sentences, there's a lot of walls of text. A character doesnt have to say everything in one, they can take multiple clicks.

Infodumps are bad. The VN suddenly shifts genre by the middle of chapter 3. There's a lot of whiplash moments that make you feel confused instead of intrigued. The prologue would've been so much better shown to us rather than being given a summary to study.

Characters often go 0 to 100 and I dont understand why. It feels jarring and weird. They come across one way and then they flip a switch and become a completely different person. It gets unnecessarily violent and cruel and the writing doesnt make it feel right. Everyone is so mean to Lucian for no reason at all, even when he's right.

The trio had a nice chemistry but the latest chapters just threw it all away. What a shame... Atlas also, damn, wasted potential. Darius' change is too sudden and out of nowhere. It should've been gradual, again, the story moves too fast.

What this game needs is to take its time and think, people should come together and focus on that feel good potential this story could offer, but instead there's just a lot of pain. This could've been such a good experience, but it feels ruined, at least to me. And I promise I did get attached. I struggled falling asleep yesterday because I was trying to figure out what was wrong, how to improve, what I would fix. And... I guess the game needs "filler" but with that I mean the characters have to interact, learn about themselves, AND BE NICE.

Major spoiler now ---- I hate how the game is implying that Lucian might've been the one to trigger Atlas into having sex by using his aspects. I hope I'm wrong. That man needs help, but instead is being stepped on over and over and over.

It's a short romance slice of life story, very straightforward and enjoyable if you're into big kind man and *cough* size difference.

I like the art, bless you Kinu, your work is always gorgeous and Stephan is the highlight of the show. I'm looking forward to more updates.

Now I want to share a few things I've noticed that aren't bad, more like my tastes getting in the way. The first Stephan CG has the wrong Tshirt,  the prose drags a lot, many times I went "This isnt important please lets move on" but I forgive you. I'm someone who likes to move fast.

ah yeah, the story is hinting at vore? It doesn't really happen, but the way certain concepts are expressed, like the MC labeling himself prey brings this into question. Let me have my conspiracy theory.

Me and my friends just finished catching up and I really like this VN. You can see there's a lot of love and passion poured into this project. I have a few things I dislike, like Theodore just breathing and doing nothing and Lawrence being pretty obvious but everything else is really fun. I love Javier, I like Rou and the fun size diff between them. Oh, yeah Monti is so hilarious and cute.

Anyway we'll stay the whole way, keep up the good work!

Theodore just can't defeat the "I'm useless and I have no reason to be here" allegations.

Dawntide is really short, but there is so much potential inside. Give it a look NOW.

Me and my friends have been playing this game recently and it was really intense for how short the game is, really well done.

The music, the special effects, the backgrounds, the sprites, everything blends together to deliver an incredible experience. Ranzo's route tugged at my heartstrings, but Griff's route actually made me tear up. Riley's desires, his voices, left a big impression on us. I felt seen. I felt understood and it also fueled my passion to make a game like yours.

Thank you for making this VN, I'll be cheering you on and patiently wait for more content, so underrated, I hope people will see this message of mine and check you out. It's been super fun!

High seas is a goofy pirate animesque FVN

If you like pirates then you gotta check this one out. It's short, still in development, but the story looks promising! The crocodile is really sweet and good looking.

The story could also use some slowing down instead of rushing through the "boring" parts to get to the what the creators considers the "good" you need both to make the good feel gratifying.

Arches was an insane read. I'm sure many people, me included, walked into this thinking they would see Echo again, I personally would've loved to meet that cast one more time, some of them, but you don't and I felt sad about it only for the story to pick me up and destroy me regardless. TL DR I had fun, it was a good fucked up story just like I expected it to be.

We played the game with our friends on Discord and it was a fun relatable game to watch together. I really like the music theme, first time seeing it myself.

I also enjoyed the MC being a big boy. Make sure you show me more of him! The only downside of him being the MC is that I won't get to see his sprites XD

Who doesn't know about Echo? I don't need to say anything. Red is my favorite color though.

Before you guys read my review ---- I LOVE password, but it's also a mess. IT'S A BIG MESS. But I love password. I am here today writing this because password slapped me in the face and said THEN YOU DO IT. So I did. I did my own VN. So I'm thankful to password, but it has its flaws. And the flaws aren't small either.

The story could've used less routes. I'm going to be forward with you--- hoss and sal do nothing to the game. And I know how tough this game has been on you, which is why, removing two routes would've lowered your workload a lot.

The story drags. A LOT. NOTHING HAPPENS FOR TOO LONG. They have nothingburger conversations that end up with "dont worry about it" or "it's complicated" and that's what the game does 50% of its runtime. The filler needs to be fun otherwise you can't eat the slop, but it's not.

The main cast resorting to violence is so jarring to me. None of them feel like they would. It's so ooc for me, especially Dave. Only Tyson has the motives to do that, but everyone else? Eh.

Speaking of Tyson you murdered this man. The "scene" you know exactly which scene. It doesn't work. It's not logical. His whole personality becomes "but Im not gay" so the attempted **** doesn't make sense at all.

Password should've stuck to its gimmick all the way, but by the fourth the game is done and that mechanic is ditched. Thanatos becomes the new main character, yippe!

Dave is the most interesting character, even if he can be quite convenient to use and a bit inconsistent, but the father storyline is good. When you know what you want. You deliver. You did it. That scene is crazy good. You know what other scene is scary good? His scripted death. Tyson holding him in tears, Dave seeing his dad but it's just Tyson. That? That is gorgeous.

True ending doesn't exist. I don't want to talk about it.

At the end of the day I love and hate this game. It's wasted potential. It could've been so much more.
