Played it on the day before my final exams. From the screenshots alone, i thought it was worth trying out. Graphics are really cute and cosy) The summer feeling is spot on and the pinch of mystery made it perfect for me. However, what made this an unforgettable experience is The Ending of the demo. Most of the stress and anxiety i had before finals just.... kinda evaporated. I truly feel lucky to have stumbled on this demo and thankfull to the creator for the laughs. God, the poem. A true bliss.
I used to play gameboy zelda "The Minish Cap". Was one of my favorites back in 2013. (had no money, only phone, taste for the oldschool and a soul of a pirate). I played it once on my phone, and then again on a real gameboy with a real cartrage. I believe, it is one of the most beautiful games the console had to offer and very fun gameplaywise.
I wanted to make it clear that i love old zelda games, and Anodyne is a breathtaking omage to them. I would even go so far as to say that it is one of my favorite games. It has a bit of nostalgia to it, but it also takes a very different direction with the formula. It has good humour regarding old tropes (like the shopkeeper from whom you cannot by anything because there is actually no currency in the game) and i like the dark tone of the game. The world of Anodyne is melancholic, and sometimes upsetting (i was not prepared for the fisherman). There is very little dialog, and combined with dark tone of the world (+ the litteral Nexus space from where you can choose different locations) it bears similarities with infamous Yume Nikki. And, this combination feels like it was scientifically created to fit my tastes.
The game has cool bosses, great Ost (honestly, so, so good) and an incredible after game experience. The only thing that used to upset me about the Minish Cap is that there was nothing to do after beating the game - after the ending you could return to your last save... the world is still in danger but now you can spend you time solving unfinished puzzles? This gem however takes it on a whole different level. I do not want to spoil anything for those who might feel inclined to try this one out. All i can say... do pay attention to places that you dont have an access to, the game wont let you visit them later either. Maybe even write them down)))
I am afraid, that the game is not meant for a wide audience (the comments on steam made my blood boil). It has a specific appeal for those who had at least some experience with the old action-adventure games. If you did have that experience, i strongly suggest to try it out.
Man, I really, really want to play Anodyne 2. and like 100 other games and demos.
Beautiful Demo! Just wow. The graphics are reminiscent of Neverhood claymation and preamble is incredibly simple - our hero is hungry, find some food. The game has wordless narative. Some things are explained through signs and pictures, but mostly you are left to discover the meaning of things for yourself.
The game has a rather sad tone - the main character is clearly affected with hoarding disorder. His living conditions are disastrous, and from what it seems, he continuously makes an active choice to live in that space. For a short moment, you can see the outside world, which makes you immediately wonder, how did his situation come to be. The subject hits close to home.
Once you've figured the main movements the character can make, the demo will take you very little time. However, its simplistic storytelling is very powerful. I imediately got attached to gob. You cannot help but sympathise with him and hope, for his own sake, that along with food he might find an escape from whatever it is that makes him hide in the sewers.
Betula of my Fatum. Loved the graphics as well as music. The autumn room with its calm atmosphere and ambience etched into my mind. Strangely, a comforting experience.
A very cool Experiment! Some of the games were great and some... not so much, which is a problem, considering that you cannot play them separately. But, at the same time it is the beauty of this project. Otherwise it would have been another haunted ps1 collection. The fact that you have to try out different games and styles, even if you aren't comfortable with them is precisely the point. Finding the ones that are fun for You makes them more special.
P.S. not a fan of games that were heavy on "multiverse" part of the story. Really wanted to skip those. But still, general experience was very fun)
