But the outcome was more aesthetically pleasing than I thought. This app is a true gem for game developers like me.

The handfull of youtube videos I found of this gave rave reviews and I have heard so much about it. I must say, I am really dissapointed. Not at all what I thought it would be. The software itself is incredibly simplistic with only a few basic options available. I know refunds are out of the question but, hopefully this can be a warning to any future purchasers on the edge on buying. Dont take the word of reviews and make double sure you know EXACTLY what you are buying. But then again maybe it's me and I just expected too much.

I have searched and I know you won't be adding character models or anything.  But my question is this,

Is there a program like this for characters?  Aside from creating 3D models in Blender and doing whatever needs to be done to get those as sprite sheets.  As I said I am new to most of this and would like to use the asset forge to make all assets for a isometric type game in Construct 3.  But I need to be able to get player models and enemies as well.  And I don't know how to 3d model.

Sorry if this is the dumbest question

(basically I spent 5-6 mins in blender butchering the horrendous mess from below!)

I called a halt on my first attempt after an hour or more of banging my head against the wall....

I couldn't get anything tapered to fit on either front or back end (no that nose really is central!!)

the engines despite being copy/pasted ended up slightly different scales

fitting a canard to a wing just looked - well my eyes still hurt

I can live with the colours being in odd places as I can apply materials to the different faces in blender without it breaking the model (i think)

I had thought that I could just use asset forge to very quickly rough something together and then make it look 1/2 presentable with blender - unfortunately exported welded blocks or not, even the lightest editing in blender and something is messing up the shading (its not normals) its an artifact I've seen when the mesh is inconsistent ie with duplicate verts (I welded all close distance verts but that didn't work) - basically it makes a flat shaded face look oddly graduated with the graduation moving very oddly as a light source or the model moves around... (its hard to describe)

anyhow the bottom line fixing with blender isn't an option and I can't seem to fit anything together in the way other people seem to be doing, I'm just not getting something... :(

Which is SO frustrating as I can see the amazing potential of this app...

I'm making a short film in Blender, and I'm using Asset Forge to create some of the background content. I'm using it to create buildings, importing them into Blender and adding texture detail when needed  - closeups and such. When far away, most of the time, the lighting does the trick.

Leaving a couple of pics for you guys to see what I'm talking about. The building was created in asset forge 2, then added some detail in Blender. I think Asset Forge has great potential on this type of use, besides the regular ones, even more when I'm creating this short as one man show.

Hope you guys like it!

Alimpo

However, you can't just export the whole obj file of your custom model because the final .obj model isnt optimized for 3D printing. (The individual blocks, by itself, are 3D printable)

What you can do if you want to 3d print your model, dissassemble it on AssetForge, export the dissassembled parts as a single obj file and export it to TinkerCad.

Separate the parts in TinkerCad (that's another story) and reassemble it there.

Export it as .stl file, slice it on your slicer and print it !!

Asset Forge looks to be very promising and as an aspiring game studio 'entrepreneur' of sorts, I have great hopes for this tool. The ease of use and block style nature will no doubt allow me and my future team to rapidly prototype ideas and design full models.

Now that I'm done praising the capabilities of the tool, I was wondering how licensing worked; is a new license required for every machine and/or user, if so, is there any or the possibility of any studio licenses, so 3+ users?

Hopefully I've made a bit of sense!

Thanks,

Jordan.

Kind of. I am not a programmer. I am in a team of a indie company. I learned very much until now. But even if i make my own models, Asset Forge was on my watchlist and i couldn´t resist anymore. I am working primarily with blender, the beast in itself in combination with substance painter (from the first version on, until now). Now i got the very crazy idea, to make a game by myself, to let the fantasy flow (had to). Because i know how much work it is, even with a team, i am searched already for some time (and probably) money safers. Asset Forge is one of them and even if i find out, it is just not right for my project, i could do something good to the Kenney universe ;) (the name itself reminds me of Kennywood, everytime i am reading it, which is a good thing!)

My targets are Armory 3D (because it´s awesome) and Unreal Engine 4 (because it´s awesome, too).
It was a long and stoney way to find the right engine. I could not yet decide which one, so i will try it out - in both.
Aside of "my first (small and simple) game", i started a blog, to help others out and having a diary.

Especially for beginners which are having less or no experience in this genre. I have the feeling that Asset Forge will fit into my pipeline perfectly. It looks good, it is intuitiv like no other software i used recently and it is great for beginner and advanced builders (like a rollercoaster tycoon for real games xD). And to build something is also very much fun (which is an very important part, too). The ability to import your own blocks and even some basic texture abilities are great on top.

Thank you, Kenney! This one is unique and accessible + affortable == awesome! I am excited to push some boundaries with this one :D And i am also excited for 2.0! Let the blocks "roll!" ;) Greetings.

I was wondering, though, if you could release the colour palette you use for making the art? That way I can create custom content that matches the colours you use. I know I could just colour pick from the already existing assets , but having a palette would make it easier.

I couldn't find a category that fits this post, so I posted it here.

https://itch.io/t/119068/fixing-custom-block-texturesFixing custom block textureshttps://itch.io/t/119068/fixing-custom-block-texturesSat, 08 Jul 2017 18:57:54 GMTSat, 08 Jul 2017 18:57:54 GMTSat, 08 Jul 2017 18:57:54 GMTI'm here to teach you how to make your custom blocks use the default materials from Asset Forge instead of making a new set of materials for each custom block you create and import. This is especially useful if you're building a set and want consistency across your pieces instead of having to change properties on each block.

The first thing to know is that Asset Forge will automatically use a material if the name already exists, otherwise it will create a new material. If you're making a set and want all of your parts to share some materials make sure you use a consistent name when naming the materials.
The second thing to know is that Asset Forge has a number of built in Materials. If you're building a block set that should integrate with the Vehicle pack, for example, you'll want to use the same material names and properties. Having the same names means that you'll share materials with the default assets, and having the same properties means you won't overwrite any of the default settings should you place your block first. Asset Forge takes the properties of the first material with a name and makes that material, all subsequent assets placed using that material name will inherent the properties of the existing material.
Below is a list of some of the default materials and their common usage. There are probably more that I've not yet found.
_defaultMat  -  The default white material
tire  -  Used on tires, roof racks, and many grey/black blocks
blueSteel  -  The blue material applied to the majority of vehicle and aircraft parts
orangeSteel  -  The tops of cars and hood/bonnet covers
  glass  -  It's glass
wood  -  Used mostly in the buildings packs

The easiest way to make sure you're using the same matrials is to check the materials in your 3D modeling program of choice. Sometimes when importing an object the modeler will like to append to the material name so you'll get something like _defaultMat.001  Just change the material name.
A surefire way to ensure you have the same material name and properties is to open your .mtl file and copy/paste the default proterties used in Asset Forge. The properties of the above materials are below:

Ks 0.330000 0.330000 0.330000

If you had different material names you will need to open the .obj in a text editor and modify the "usemat ..." line i.e "usemtl _defaultMat.001" -> "usemtl _defaultMat"

Help, my blocks are shiny!
Your faces are probably sharp, or that's what I've experienced.
In Blender do the following:
Import your obj, delete the default cube if necessary
Right Click to select the obj
Press [TAB] to enter edit mode
In the left pane select the "Shading/UVs" tab
Click the button labeled "Flat" under the Faces: heading
Export your fixed model.

https://itch.io/t/118554/early-thoughts-on-asset-forgeEarly Thoughts on Asset Forgehttps://itch.io/t/118554/early-thoughts-on-asset-forgeFri, 07 Jul 2017 03:05:58 GMTFri, 07 Jul 2017 03:05:58 GMTFri, 07 Jul 2017 03:05:58 GMTHaving played a bunch with the first few builds of asset forge, I have a bunch of thoughts and feedback I'd like to voice; as well as to hear other people's ideas. From me, basically all positive, especially considering the early stage we're at.

Even with a pretty small amount of collections at hand, the system feels flexible. The ability to freely add your own models will make this super powerful, and I look forward to seeing the new systems for browsing collections that Kenney has discussed.

Having some tools greyed out, like a free transform and advanced texturing, is a good way to see whats coming in future updates. It also stops me complaining that they aren't there, because when they are this will really open up ; I sincerely look forward to it

I think it's a really fun tool that fits nicely into two unfilled (as far as I'm aware) roles :

1) Beginners / Lone programmers
It bridges the gaps between using free/open-source assets, and building things yourself.
Usually it's quite hard to find free assets that you can spin into something of your own - and this will make it a whole lot easier.
As a lone programmer with art experience, I can see myself using this a lot when I just want basic assets for layout.

2) Small Studios / Indie Teams
It makes it far more possible to spread the load of art creation around a small team.
By creating some smaller modular prefabs, team members with little to no experience in 3D software could start assembling models.
I'm excited to see if gets picked up in this way, I'd love for something to fill this role.

Interested to hear how everyone plans to use it!
