I'd be interested to know just how much can be done in 2D here compared to Adventure Creature before I go spending 80 bucks on that package. I'd mostly be making a life sim/RPG.

Most recent changes are the addition of screenshots in save games and a template save/restore menu.

If this is fairly stable over the next week I'll take it out of beta status. Let me know if you encounter any issues.

Most importantly, the minimum unity version to use is now v2020.3.

So if you want to try the beta, update unity to the latest 2020 version first.

Here's the main changes so far:

  • Unity version update to 2020.3
    • Lots of fixes for things that weren't working quite right.
    • Now using Unity's new style of atlases (since old style was removed). Atlas files are now created automatically (it'll ask if you want to create them for you if upgrading).
    • Game view no longer captures mouse on windows
  • Gui System refactor
    • You can now create and edit simple guis in similar way to creating a room. Instead of props/hotspots, you use Buttons, Images and Labels, etc.
    • See Gui System Documentation

Grab the beta from the main itch page, any issues, let me know here!

Do you think is it possible in the future to have characters doing actions via keyboard commands instead of GUI?

Don't know why I didn't make an itch page for it sooner really, since I really wanted to have some forums for people to ask questions on. I just didn't think of it!

This'll be Dave posting under this Powerhoof itch account btw ;)

So anyway, the update that just went up had loads of stuff. I've taken about a month off working on The Drifter to do some game jams, (including You're Watching ICEBOX which was a PowerQuest game), and to update my tools.

Now that's done, I'm planning on getting back onto The Drifter, but still spend some time each work working on PowerQuest. The first thing I really need to do is update to a newer version of unity, which I've been holding off on for ages. Then I want to have a go at making some more integrated GUI tools, and a proper pause menu and save/load game menu.

But we'll see how we go!

I think to summarise my own situation:

My main issues with AGS are that it's Windows-only and I'm on a Mac. I also don't like how some of the "back-end" is quite dated with AGS. I'm most interested, for example, in using normalmaps & lighting scenes properly in 2D. I think (?) Unity will allow me to do this. So I can have candles/fireplaces/lamps cast real light and play with light effects. And full parallax support.

My main love for AGS (and why I keep coming back to it) is that it's soooo easy to script a game. So I can focus on the art, the dialog, the story, the puzzles.

I'm more, more, more than happy to pay for PowerQuest. But as a side-by-side with my loves & issues with AGS, how would you say PowerQuest compares? I have 0 programming skills, C# means nothing to me, and I prefer sticking with somewhat "basic" scripting. Which I think PowerQuest includes?

Hello everyone, first post here on the board.

I'm pretty new to Unity and PowerQuest, but I started getting the hang of it and I "extended" PQ 0.12.4 a bit to support a fixed-height scrollable GUI for dialogs, useful for sword-fighting-like long lists of options.

The result should be something like this:

Caveats

  1. This package can be imported over a fresh PQ 0.12.4 installation, still untested on newer version (should probably work but you risk to overwrite some newer functions)
  2. The package contains an extended dialog tree between Dave and Barney for demo purposed. I did it pretty quickly and it may have rough edges.
  3. It is my very first time exporting a package for Unity, let alone doing something with the framework, let alone working on someone else's project so it may be perfectly possible that this will explode setting your house on fire... I would suggest to try it out on a brand new project OR version your code before trying it out.

You can download the updated package here.
For a quick how-to, see this post.

Feedback and criticism more than welcome!
Thanks

MIT, BSD, Apache, if you want to be permissive or something less open I guess...

Think thats the first time I've ever installed a package without being shouted at by the Console... I'd say thats a very good sign that it's been coded very well indeed. No problems -amazing seen as though in your video you say you're using version 5.6... it didn't even ask me if I wanted to upgrade any obsolete API calls.. *fainted*

Love the way the scripting is programming in c# but you hide all the evil stuff from been displayed in your editor... Tasty!

So for anyone sensible enough to be trying this out - only one thing I had to do to get the demo scene to work - add the Unity scenes to the build settings... then I was off to scripting heaven. For an artist who can code like me it's a perfect fit.

I do enjoy using Chris Burton's Adventure Game Creator... but whenever I use the visual scripting tool I always think how much easier a simple text driven scripting editor would have been ----- and you've made it!

Thank you very much for putting this out for free.
