I have always loved the arcade game Galaga. I would like to create an homage to this classic shooter. I spent a few minutes working on a ship design. I'm not sure if this is for an enemy or the player yet. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pf0...

Basically you are made the God of the Earth after the tension of World War 3 almost beginning and now you have to answer the prayers of the people and try to make sure you prevent World War 3, protect humanity, animals and don't mess everything up!

Or the opposite for the fun stuff ;).

Here's an example

Rodrick : "I hate crows! They are so noisy and stupid."

Choice 1 - Make Roger love crows

Choice 2 - Make crows hate Rodrick

Choice 3 - Kill all the crows

Choice 4 - Kill Rodrick

Choice 5 - Ignore Request

Choice 1 will result in Roger asking you to allow crow marriage.

Choice 2 will result in crows attacking Rodrick while he's in a car and you get the choice to roll down his window ;), or to call crows off, or to ignore this, or to kill Rodrick yourself ;).

Choice 3 will result in world pandemic situation and unstable ecosystem.

Choice 4 will result in nothing. Just a human you killed resulting in penalty.

Choice 5 will result in Rodrick committing suicide because of crows.

So anyways look down for progress report!

I've been watching a lot of history programs recently, so my ideas naturally fell from that. My game will be about the Minoan civilization of ancient Crete over 3000 years ago. Their capitol of Knossos is believed to be the inspiration for Atlantis (as well as many other myths and legends), as it was a large city that was lost beneath the sea when it was hit by a huge wave originating from a volcanic eruption on Santorini, and basically spelled the end for the Minoans.

The way I tie this into the game is that you must spread the Minoan culture and people as much as you can before the disaster. You spread culture by creating new settlements, to acquire new resources, and establishing trade. When the disaster happens it can wipe out a number of your cities and ships. If you're culture of not strong enough after this event, you lose, if it is still strong enough you carry on until the next disaster. So your mission is to help the Minoans avoid their fall in the face of repeated apocalyptic events.

Inspirations for the gameplay include: Civ V & Grand Ages

Day 1:

Started with a tileset, as I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull of anything I'd like with the given pallette, but I'm suprised (I think it turned out well):

I'm using JS/HTML5. The world map is loaded from an image and tiles are placed based on it. I got auto-tiling working for the land, but I'll show pics of that tomorrow when I've got more on it. :)

But I did doodle this character art thing:
http://imgur.com/7RfE8fY

Tomorrow I hope to spend a couple of hours setting up a simple game loop where you have a saloon on screen, you can buy inventory of beer and whiskey, customers walk in, buy beer and whiskey, and eventually leave.

Later on, hopefully: customer satisfaction rating affecting patronage, world events too, hiring staff of bartenders, pianoplayers and bouncers, paying them every day, violent customers that you can shoot if you have bought the gun, prostitution.

- Bartender pretty much mandatory, but he can die
- Prostitution (men+women) good source of income and increased interest in establishment, which also means...
- More dangerous customers. Bouncers catch most, but if you can't afford one you need to take them down yourself (pay attention, point and shoot.)
- Piano player increases sale of alcohol...

So, i still don't know what game this will be. For now, i have just name and i setted up basic shader. Also, i ghought it will be nice if i made it so much dos-like as possible. And that means :

DOS POWER!

As you can see on screen, i tried to make more video modes, so player can choose his favourite palette. Here is image of title screen with all video modes.

CGA 0 - Dark

CGA 0 - Light

CGA 1 - Dark

CGA 1 - Light

Only thing which i know, i make it dark :D So, thanks for reading! And be ready for next devlog soon!

I've finished a decent number of game jams (none on Itch for some reason) but these might be the most unique constraints I've worked in. I've just finished a week or so of somewhat intensive Unity study. My last commercial game used Lua/Love2D, but I need to step up to Unity big time, so this will be a good test of what I've learned.

I didn't officially join the event until today. I used the time I was able to spend on pinning down a workflow and finding a method to bring in Blender models and get them colored and lit--unlit as it turns out--appropriately.  I worried that a 3D Unity project wouldn't look good with such a restricted palette, but the "toon edge" idea dawned on me in a quick design shower  and I knew I had to take a serious run at this.*

I'm hanging it up for the day with a method for modeling and coloring. Tomorrow I want something loosely resembling a starting area, and I'd like to be close enough to a functional prototype that I can move around in it.

* A design shower is my design activity for any project that won't have proper documentation. I go in with a problem and come out with a plan. Try it if you haven't.

Pallet Chosen: P1

Language of Choice: Haskell + SDL2 Wrapper

Notes:

I have a small get-up-and-go project that is nothing more than a hello world SDL2 tutorial, but in Haskell with sdl2-text and the ability to write sine waves to the audio card.

My plan is to be able to generate levels of increasing difficulty by defining classes of 3SAT problems. e.g. (x or y or z) and ( not x or y or not z) ..., where the player can flip variables by interacting with the level until the hidden problem for that level is solved.

I want to avoid combat, so it might be more environmental. something like: x's are birds, y's are trees, and z's are water and the different clauses (triples of variables) correspond to segments of the level.

The game can tune difficulty as it goes by either increasing the number of unique variables ~ actors in the game, increasing the number of clauses ~ segments in the level, or introducing super-variables that can mutate the state of the game (touch multiple variables) imposing the need for order of operations.

It would just be nice to have a game I can automatically test from start to finish and then just focus on making pretty, so that's what I'm going to try to do.

Should be able to support Windows, Mac, and Linux when I'm done. I've tested it on Mac and Linux at least. 2D because SDL2, not going to try and do fancy 4color shader stuff today :)

Good luck to everyone else
