Save doesn't seem to work for me. After quitting or restarting the game there is no option to resume. After dying, the game enters a loop of the "Oh dear, it seems you have fallen..." dialog, and pressing the button just causes the music to restart and the same dialog to replay. The only way out is to close the game.

Graphics preferences are saved. The game does create a 'save' directory with 'Gearend-0.sav' and 'options.cfg' and the .sav file is re-written each time I use a save spot. No idea what the problem is.

I like this game a lot, and would like to get the full version if saving works.  There are some other issues as well, but not as major.  The game seems unusually system intensive with all effects on, and has crashed when switching to full-screen mode. I could easily live with this (and will provide more info if you'd like), but the ultra-hard-core no save mode seems more pressing. Too hardcore for me.

I'm running the Linux 64 demo on Mint 17.1 with a GeForce GTX 560 Ti card and 4 gigs of memory.

It's especially noticeable when you start up the game and go from title screen to the opening scene. Also, the text noise is very high pitched which makes it pretty annoying to hear it over and over again, and it's fine most of the time but, for example, when you press enter and go to the equipment screen, going all the way down is extremely annoying. Also, the game crashed for me when I pressed jump after walking into the treadmill room. It also happened on my other computer (they're both 64-bit Windows 10) . One other small thing, the game runs perfectly in windowed, but in full screen even with 8 GB of RAM and 3.0ghz it still runs at at least half the UPS and half the FPS. Other than that, content wise, it's great! Really great feel to it and captures my attention. Great job sol! Definitely gonna buy it when it comes out.

Unfortunately the game runs poorly, but it does not appear to be a normal performance issue. The intro text crawls onto my screen one character at a time, as I would expect (since I played the Windows version) but the time between the characters appearing is about a second per character. Could be strange performance issue, but maybe you used a platform-specific timing or sleep function somewhere? Anything I can do to help provide more info for you? It seems to use 100% of one of my cores but doesn't do much with it.

I turned off all the higher level graphical effects that were available in the options, but that didn't really seem to change anything (at the title screen, or in the game).

The only thing that helps is shrinking the window size to something unplayably small.

I would guess that there is some fairly expensive shader code running at all times, which older hardware can't really handle.

My GPU is an nvidia GeForce 9300M GS, which is quite old at this point, but is still an "OpenGL ES 2.0-compatible graphics card" - I think it should be able to render a game like Gearend at 60 fps, provided all the fancy graphical effects are turned off.

... Or not, but then it would probably be a good idea to expand the minimum system requirements to something higher.

I figured this may have been due to the mechanic of recharging energy when you move back and forth, so I starting shooting my gun (shepherd arm) and when I started to recharge by moving back and forth, the core would disappear sometimes again. I don't know if this is intentional but I figured you should know as sometimes it can be jarring.

TL;DR sometimes the core image will disappear when recharging energy.

This only works if he enters the door before or at the middle point of the door while skating with the Shears Legs.

I'm not sure if that's intentional, but I found it weird if he were to enter a room while a whole door's length away from the actual door.

This may or may not be a nitpick.

I love the atmosphere and feel of the game so far and can't wait for the release, but I found a couple issues you might want to consider.

Firstly, my biggest problem are the controls. I find it odd that the default directional keys are the arrow keys, yet jump is X. This alongside with both combat keys being next to x, this leads to some clunky platforming and combat game play, even when fighting those zippy onion things (love them by the way, I think their aggressive AI is fun to fight). Epsilon also gives off the feel of a heavier robot, yet has a very floaty jump, making it appear as if the environment was in sub-zero gravity. With X also being accept yet the down arrow being interact, interacting with signs and NPCs can be a bit confusing at first. I found game play to be much easier with these changed controls as follows:

WASD for movement

Left and right attacks be left and right arrows, with accept staying as the down arrow key

Accept changing to Enter

All other controls remain the same, as I found no fault with them. I understand if you are used to the controls as you have been developing the game for months, but immediately upon playing I found the controls to be flawed. I'll be fine if you keep these controls as the default, but bear in mind I will change the controls once I get the game.

I do realize this is not a finished product, but I hope this isn't the final level design. Unless this is a more "throw you out into the world" kind of game, it it not so great of a place to have a small tutorial. And the moody lighting is great for atmosphere, but many obstacles such as the spikes, gaps in the platforms at the hub city, and the first camera-laser enemy I failed to see the first time through. Because of the darkened lighting, I didn't notice that pile of bricks holding the gate key, and so it took me a while to find it. Also the area with the elevator platform is a bit slow, and the placement of the second camera-laser enemy is rather annoying. Also, the shadowy lighting effect on things in the background looks pretty cool, but I noticed it makes them seem a little flat like stage props, as if the game had the visual style of Paper Mario. I'm not sure if this is want you are going for, but I just noticed this while walking past the trees in the grassy area.

Overall, I think with a little polish this game could be really great! I hope I wasn't too harsh on your game, just trying to make it the best it can be.

https://itch.io/t/72983/large-bugsuggestion-postLarge bug/suggestion posthttps://itch.io/t/72983/large-bugsuggestion-postSat, 15 Apr 2017 21:01:27 GMTSat, 15 Apr 2017 21:01:27 GMTSat, 15 Apr 2017 21:01:27 GMT Hey Solar, so I've played through much of the demo, and I've found a bunch of things I thought might be better to put into one post since most are pretty minor.

I couldn't play the game on my Mac machine, but I also have a Windows and Linux machine to try stuff on. I'm playing the game on Windows 7 on a gaming PC (so pretty good specs).

I'll split this post into three parts: the stuff I liked, bugs and suggestions

Stuff I liked

Eps controls great (although a little floaty for my taste). I like the music a lot, it goes really well with the art. The shaders are working great. The performance is good on my gaming PC, aside from the minor hiccups from when Java does a garbage collection (you might want to try gradual garbage collection if it doesn't slow down your game too much).

Bugs

  1. When running from left to right or right to left with Eps, sometimes you can see the vertical tile seams. This happens in various areas in the demo (most prominently in the scrolling screen one screen to the right of the "fingerprint door" doors)
  2. My game crashed after leaving it open (literally doing nothing) after like 20 minutes-ish? Have not been able to reproduce this one though
  3. Not sure if this is a bug, but on the equipment screen there are a bunch of parts I have not gotten yet. More specifically the "shear legs", the "roundtable core", the "prescript 0-9-0 core" and the "deterrent arm", and I can equip all of them.
  4. I pushed one of the runny/jumpy guys into another screen and it kind of just chilled there (they don't seem to come back into the same screen). That or he was just stuck on something lol
  5. When I go fullscreen with an xbox controller, my xbox controller doesn't work anymore, I have to restart the game. Meaning, as of now, there is no way to play fullscreen with my joystick (since fullscreen doesn't stay active after a game restart)

Suggestions

  1. When you talk to characters, it's not obvious to me who is talking (mostly referring to the cutscene with Twent and Jeremy). I know their mouths are moving and stuff, but it's too subtle for me while I'm reading the text. I really enjoyed the way you did it with the old Gearend (with the faces), but even just a "Jeremy:" or "Twent:" when one of them starts speaking would be helpful.
  2. The fall right before Twent's room is not super obvious, but it's something I'd be watching out for as I play the game. I don't know if you intended that fall to be obvious or not.
  3. When you speak to any character, Eps always moves to the right of them to speak to them, even if I'm way on the left. I think it'd be cool if it moved to the closest place (either to the right or left).
  4. Transitioning between doors is too slow for my taste, it's almost like one second, I know it seems stupid but if you're going in/out of doors often, it's a little annoying.
  5. Saving takes too long for me. I guess it doesn't matter if you don't intend for people to save a lot though.
  6. Finally, if you're going for a more serious tone, all the characters are too light-hearted and fun. If you're going for a Cavestory type of feel, I'm not really getting it. However, this is only the demo, so I can't speak for the rest of the game. In case you're wondering, I really like the tone of the game as it is now.

Conclusion

As you might have noticed all the bugs and suggestions are small. As of now, I'd still probably buy the full game just off playing the demo because I liked it so much :)

It's looking awesome Solarlune, hope this helps a little!

My laptop is a Lenovo T440. Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 4300U
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4400
RAM: 8GB
OS: Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.2 64-bit

It's not an incapable laptop - it can play basic games like League of Legends and older LEGO games.

The game runs fine in the menu. When starting the game, CPU usage goes up to 100%, the game lags, and the window has strange black artefacts. The artefacts get worse when at the edges of the "stage" (before the camera pans to the next stage).

Images of artefacting: http://imgur.com/a/txh0P

I have tried disabling all special effects (or changing them to the minimum) and the same problem occurs.

It could be a problem with Ubuntu GNOME (I've only recently started using it), or possibly the Linux Intel Graphics drivers. Either way, I'd like to see this fixed!

Cheers

Reproduce:

  1. Open Gearend for the first time
  2. Go into options and enable fullscreen
  3. Apply settings
  4. Close the game and reopen

Problem: The game is not in fullscreen anymore (windowed mode), but the options menu says that fullscreen is enabled. Toggling fullscreen to off then to on, puts the game back into fullscreen.

I think it has to do with the way the game resets a certain area after saving and reloading.

1. Get a Defence Upgrade Chip

2. Save

3. Restart Game

4. Go to the same place and the chip will have respawned.

I have tested it at the place near the starting area and at the Reasearch Facility Hub, working in both places.

https://itch.io/t/72919/solved-pressing-rebind-input-crashes-game[SOLVED] Pressing "Rebind Input" crashes Game.https://itch.io/t/72919/solved-pressing-rebind-input-crashes-gameSat, 15 Apr 2017 14:29:18 GMTSat, 15 Apr 2017 14:29:18 GMTSun, 16 Apr 2017 08:52:16 GMTHey Sol! So I am kinda stuck, the main problem here is that I am unable to rebind my inputs and that I have no idea what the default input keys are...

So whenever I go and press the "rebind inputs" button, the game crashes, I'm also not sure whether it's just a placeholder or it's a real bug.

Thanks Solarlune.
