The title of my game is not just a random choice. It's a reference to a classic of the genre, one of the first first-person shooters — Catacomb 3-D (released in 1991), created by the legendary id Software.
Before Catacomb 3-D, the studio had already released Hovertank 3D — also a maze shooter, but with minimal graphics. Catacomb 3-D was the first to feature fully textured objects, and the gameplay became nonlinear. The game started to feel less like a tech demo and more like a true adventure. This project paved the way for the creation of the dynamic Wolfenstein 3D, and later the masterpiece Doom.
Today, many have forgotten about this modest game, overshadowed by the hits that followed, but for me, it represents an important milestone in the history of game development.
I wanted to pay tribute to Catacomb 3-D, because without such pioneering projects, we wouldn’t have the modern masterpieces we play today. It’s games like this that paved the way for what we see and love now.
