Timeless Desires in Creativity

My name is Gabriel, and I want to make games.

Since I was little, as early as I can remember, gaming was a significant part in my upbringing. Both of my parents (my father mainly) were active with video games and they incorporated that as a form of entertainment for me. Although they bought me some kid-friendly games to play, I was more interested in whatever my father would be playing. I specifically remember Bioshock and Unreal Tournament. He even let me try Unreal Tournament (though, I did end up getting him banned because I wasn't playing properly, sorry haha)

As the years went on, gaming continued to play a considerable role in my life. We had an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii that I would play after school every day. If I weren't playing those, I would be watching YouTube Let's Play series from creators of the platform. Although I enjoyed playing, various experiences would end up working together to establish a new passion:

  • Growing up on YouTube, I found myself wanting to be like those creators, and so I attempted my own YouTube channel.
  • Alongside school, my mother had me attend art classes in the evening, and so I learn the basics of drawing and sketching.
  • On several occasions, my father tried to teach me how to play piano and guitar, and eventually I attended music lessons.
  • Much later, I found an appreciation for great stories and rich lore in pieces of media, whether it were books or shows or movies or anything.

All of those experiences I had growing up shaped me into the person I am today. Today, I am someone who wants to create.

I want to create art. I want to create music. I want to create stories. I want to share these future creations with others. While this is what I want, I have found it very difficult to pursue them all alongside both school and work. In recent years, I've remained, in a way, paralyzed and unable to start or finish any projects. I'm still not sure why.

However, I came to a realisation some time ago: games of today encompass all the things I want to pursue creatively. Games are showcases of art. Games are showcases of music. Games are showcases of story. Games are showcases of creativity in several ways. This is why I want to make games. I don't want to make games because I like playing games. I want to make games because I want to make. I want to create. My hope is that I can channel these desires into one super medium.

These desires has been with me since I was in my teens. As of writing this, I am 20. I don't want to sit around and dream about these things anymore. I want this to become a reality.

I'll use this platform as a log of my journey as an indie game designer and developer (and potentially artist, though I understand how large of a workload that is).

Thank you for reading and any support you have to give,
