The following post was copied and pasted "as is" from my now defunct Substack page.
As promised, today I’ll tell you about what I’m working on at the moment. First of all, in case you haven’t read my introductory post, I’m developing both on RPG Maker and Unity. Why is that? RPG Maker lets me create things in a faster way, get out of my system the need to publish my own stuff and grow an audience while Unity can land me a job in a studio since it’s one of the (if not THE) most used engine in the world. So, what am I making on each one?
About RPG Maker, I’m adapting myself a bit to the engine and getting to know it. While with Unity I felt the limitation was what I could make with my coding skills, with this one I feel it’s gonna be what can the software do. I may be wrong but, for now, that’s how I see it.
Going into the project itself, the idea is to create short stories, which I collectively named the “Folk Tales”, based on a single character; a sort of folk hero (hence the name) for which each game is going to tell us a different adventure as if it were a tale told through oral tradition with only the very first one serving as an origin of it all. I think it’s interesting: in a world where media goes for interconnected stories through multiple movies, shows and so on (e.g.; the MCU), with so much focus on what’s canon or not (something that video games also search), to have a sort of loose collection of independent stories tied only by a single character feels refreshing.
It also lends itself to experiment with different gameplay mechanics and story devices since each game is gonna be different from the last and not a “continuation” of sorts. On one hand, it keeps my brain active since no two games will be the same (ideally) and I need that practice to develop myself as a creator and, on the other hand, it will keep you, the audience, expectating for the next installment in this series since, as I said, they are gonna differ greatly (again, ideally) and there will be a game for everyone’s taste.
On Unity I will be focusing on prototyping RPG mechanics, always influenced by the Japanese ones. I originally wanted to make a dungeon-crawler with a party creation system like in Final Fantasy 1 or Dragon Quest 3 and the option to choose which skills you get when each character leveled up. For now, it’s gonna be practice. Both this and Unreal are ideal for attempting to get a job on a consolidated studio, hopefully one that dedicates itself to RPGs.
The game I wanted to make, which I called “Escape from the Dungeon” to give it a name, would focus on replay value and trying out different party combinations, like a rogue-like. I still think the idea is good but the process is going to be on halt for a bit while I make the first Folk Tales. I will go back to it every once in a while for it but RPG Maker is the priority and the bulk of what I’ll be writing about on the first few posts from here on.
Well, that was it. To summarize, Folk Tales 1 on RPG Maker is the priority here. It is the first of a series of short stories focusing on a single character. On Unity, I’ll be making a prototype of an RPG. If I can develop Escape from the Dungeon, I’ll be happy, either on one engine or the other.
Having said all that, if you are interested in what I’m making, why not subscribe now for free and get the updates every month or two? It will help me a lot.
