Upcoming 2.0 Designs for All Character Packs

Hey all!

If you’re seeing this, it’s an announcement that in the coming weeks I’ll be uploading a redesigned version of every single character sprite from my Retro Cybercity and Nine Realms character sprite packs (incl. the free cyberpunk pack). You will still be able to use the older versions and may even prefer them. Either way, the changes fall basically into two categories:

  1. Corrections

Many sprites had small errors such as incorrect pixel placements, color errors, etc. Many of these fixes will only be noticeable if you noticed these errors in the first place.

  1. Revisions

I have revised some of the aspects of the animations and overall design rules I use for character sprites in these themes. This stuff is mostly also subtle and may be hard to notice unless you’re looking directly at the two sprites.

However, in some cases I’ve changed sprites more noticeably and slightly redesigned important elements such as clothing, hair, or anatomy. Anatomical differences are probably the most noticeable. One example is clarifying “separate”costuming elements such as jackets with firmer, darker outlining. Another example is how feminine character sprites had defined waists from the front view, but the rear view. This has been corrected and helps make feminine characters more discernible. Other changes are similar, with placement of limbs during walking animation phases being another subtle but noticeable difference, for example the “toe” pixel on side-view walking sprites is now moved to simulate the foot’s upward “curve” as it comes up for an advancing step.

In other words, it’s mostly stuff I knew I could do a better job with and felt obligated to change even if my customers never really notice it.

I have mentioned recently that I have more packs coming. I hope to release Retro Dead City by the end of Feb, functioning as a “do it all” starter pack that includes character sprites, tilesets, portraits, first person battlers, and more.

I also have more Retro Cybercity and Nine Realms content in the works.

Retro Cybercity will be updated with a new Law Enforcement/Corpo character pack as well as a portrait pack for the Gangs Character pack. Portraits for “bonus” character sprites I’ve included elsewhere, such as the Vendors pack sprites, will be included in those packs when they are complete and available to all who’ve already purchased.

Nine Realms will receive the long-time-coming “interiors” tileset update for the Nidavellir Dwarves tileset as well as a new character pack representing the Ljosalfar or Light Elves and their realm, Alfheim.

Here’s a sneak peak at some Light Elves:
