David Lopez: Devlog 1 - Conducting Research for Game Design

Hey guys. I am writing a journal on itch for the first time

For the following game design course, Gamification, we were told to gather research. Research has always played a major part in game design. There are many ways of how a game can be made. There is a lot of variety.  Taking all of this into account, it can be hard to come up with something great and creative right off the bat. With so much information we collect from various sources and websites on the internet, with various books we read, it can be hard to put all of that into one game with such little time. When we collect a lot of information, it takes most of us a lot of time to think what ideas we should use.

But if you are someone that is mostly focused on just one topic, it should be fairly easy to collect information as you don't have to worry about researching so many things at once. For instance, while I am writing this journal, I am also thinking of how I can make a game based off of Cyber Security. I'm not too familiar with this topic in particular but I figured since there are many sources that I can look at from this topic, I would not have spend too much time.

With all that said and done, it was time for me to do the hard part. As I have mentioned earlier, with so much research one person collects it can be hard to choose specific features to write about. Thankfully, after all the research I gathered, I have realized that there are a lot of possibilities related to what kind of technologies or sub-areas of cybersecurity deploy in a particular game or scenario, such as Smart Home security or Intelligent Buildings protection. For example, in this case, I will select the Smart Home concept for designing my game. It will allow to immerse the player in the role of a cybersecurity expert responsible for protecting a smart home from various cyber threats. Player will defend against interconnected devices, for example, security cameras against hackers and malware. In the process, the game will show engaging and educational gameplay to protect their own smart homes, and the player will also increase their knowledge of awareness in the Internet of things era.
