DR Newsletter #01

Hello there! 👋

A brief presentation about myself: I'm David! I'm a game developer trying to make some games. And that's it! (I'm not really good with presentations) Since 2017, making small games and demos, you can check them on my profile page. Self-learner, curious and always getting forward to improve. (Ok. Now, I guess that's really it)

I'm starting this monthly newsletter to speak and write about what's going on in one more detailed way. Everything related with my games and game industry news, if I see that they are relevant. It will work as monthly updates/announcements.

Enough time with the lights on me, let's focus on my current project.

Unnamed Project WIP ⏳

I'm not good with names, but I still have time to think in one. This project it's my hobby, so I only work on it on free times and the progress can be really slow or nonexistent in some cases (let's hope not!). It started in Dec 2022, with a lot of ups, and downs, and the idea is to be an RTS Game where people can build their own towns and attack the others towns. In one ideal scenario, people can have allies and attacks common enemies together.  A Single player game, with simple and cool features, but essentially, a funny game to enjoy. I'm not thinking about implement Multiplayer Mode, if that happens it's after have everything super stable.

Everything stills WIP! There are a lot of ideas coming in and out and there are a few of them that I've implemented but removed later because I saw that was not good and didn't fit to the game.

What was implemented recently

  • Add Building Mode - Enable to build a few buildings, but they are not doing much at the moment. We just spectate they being built.
  • Add Basic AI - NPCs with teams, ready to attack if they see you or hear some ally (of them) being attacked nearby.
  • Add a Warrior
  • Performance Improvements:
    • Migrating and cleaning logic from Blueprints to C++
    • Migrated my project from UE 4.27 to UE 5.3
  • Currently, implementing Chunk Downloader - A feature that enables the player to download the new/updated content.

I'm doing the latest one to avoid people have to download the whole game over and over when there is a bug fix or something new.  I'm not sure about how Steam handles the updates, but at least for itchio or any other platform, I believe it's a good idea.

Steam Page ?

TBD. I want to have a game, publish some updates here first, and maybe after that I will create a steam page for this game.

Final Notes

I never expected to write this much about a game that's still so early. I will share some pics and videos in the next month!

Not only that, but I will also try to improve the oncoming newsletters. I'm open to feedback and looking forward to improvements. Let me know what you think on comments.

Don't forget to follow me, here or on any other platform, to stay updated.

Thank you for your time!

Have a good day!👋
