Off to the Rat Races by Nicolas Browning

This week I did a lot of small things including changes to the fear mechanics, added sounds, and worked on a mousetrap object. But, the thing I'm most proud of is the rat race.

Since early in the project the concern of having a secondary way for the player to earn money was desired by the team. At first we considered trading stocks, but this wouldn't have taken advantage of the VR side of the project. I had suggested you could bet money on something like horse racing. Since we already were going to have rats in the game at that point my idea was you could gamble money on rat races between shifts.

When it came to making this feature a few days ago we tried finding a free asset for a racetrack, but none were quite how I wanted. If you want it done right you have to do it yourself; so, I made a racetrack asset myself by putting a bathtub asset upside down in a bigger bathub and squishing it vertically. I think it came out pretty good!

After that was a matter of making a way to differentiate the rats, set their path around the track, and write code to have a clear winner each race while keeping every race fun to watch. With all that considered I think I executed my goal well and it was really fun seeing my group place bets in real time once I got it done.

Another thing this week was I finally got around to adding in some sound effects for my features. Unfortunately, again we don't have assets that really match what I want so on Monday I'm thinking I will try to record my own audio assets myself. I'm looking forward to using my creativity to make the best possible product.
