Talking 'bout Love

Hope everyone's prepared and has their Riker Beard or their Shepard Armor ready.

I'm talking 'bout love between alien species in Redshift.

First things first, it happens. Inevitably, when working with a group of people for a while from different backgrounds with different strengths to complement your own, it's bound to happen. Two people from different alien species will fall in love. It's normal. However, children will never happen from it. Everyone is too biologically different for it to occur. Sen and Krypdyr lay eggs, and Qinians lack sexual organs. Ghosts are literal robots. Because of this, people that pursue relations with other species have to consider that fact.

However, most aliens that get into a relationship do it for the same reason as anyone does. Love, respect, and companionship. Sex might not even factor into it at all. This makes things tricky, however, as all aliens have differing lifespans, so how long the relationship can last is largely determined by the shortest lived among the two.

The Sen, for example, live for hundreds of years.

Ghosts are functionally immortal.

If they get into a long-term relationship, they have to consider they will outlive their partner and weigh that into their decision.

Among the galaxy, views on interspecies relationships are complex and vary wildly among even factions. Some people are more accepting of it, while others view it as an abomination. Others take the view of "Not my business who they shag." Sometimes, even someone's social strata will also determine the views people have. It's more acceptable in some areas for commoners to have these relationships than the rich as the rich are seen as "Of better stock" and there's a higher social demand for them to produce heirs.

Humans seem to be the most accepting of interspecies relationships. Even having entire fetishes and industries to support it. Yes, that means porn exists of it. Rule 34 says hi. Xeno and Robo-love are popular among humans.

In the Mercenary industry, it's widely accepted to have these relationships as the work is dangerous and you never know what will happen.

Creator Note: Relationships can be awkward at your table. Please use care and talk to your players before starting anything involving sex or relationships. This is a perfect example of a session 0 discussion or using the X-card at your table. The "Fade to black" approach works well. As does things like asking what the character learned about their partner. Because lets be honest, pillow talk is a thing that happens in real life. People let their guard down and talk afterwards. You don't need to RP this.

Anyways, there's more that can be said, but let's leave it to how your table will handle it.

Go forth and live up to the potential that Riker and Commander Shepard would expect you to live up to.
