Over the years, several Sherlock Holmes stories have entered public domain. One could argue that that means that the character of Sherlock Holmes is in the public domain. However, the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has disagreed.

They reluctantly ceded that you could make stories with Sherlock Holmes in them. However, certain aspects of his personality have remained off-limits without a license. From what I've heard, you couldn't depict him loving dogs, respecting women, or whatever other general things they could notice were different between the old stories and the newest ones.

Luckily, the last of Doyle's Sherlock stories enter the public domain on January 1st, 2023.
