I think I would like to preface this with that I never really liked twitter, it was always just a necessary evil that I either had to use for furry art or felt pressured to use to feel more "official". I would also like to say that I am very biased towards free and open source software. Without Linux on my crusty old Thinkpad and open source software (like Godot, Renpy, Audacity, Gimp, OBS, ect.), I probably would have never started making games or further pursuing coding as a hobby.
I moved to Mastodon because I firmly believe the open source and decentralized nature of the platform is the correct way to go. Having one company that controls everything is not "freedom", nor is it sustainable in the long run. Rather, having a kind of open standard for micro-blogging that isn't attached to a specific company or person is far more likely to stick for longer and even evolve as social media changes. This also doesn't just apply to twitter, I don't see platforms like Hive being sustainable in the long run.
Right now, the only thing Twitter has that Mastodon does not is the people, but for everything else, Mastodon serves my needs better than Twitter ever could. I actually feel more free to talk on mastodon than twitter, and I don't see that feeling changing any time soon. Even if mastodon doesn't become the "twitter killer", I will likely stay on mastodon because I believe in what it stands for. Free and open communication.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. If I think of anything else I would like to add on the subject, I will probably edit this post rather than making a new post. Have a nice day.
